Ho un lettore mp3 che funziona anche da hd.
Premetto che è una partizione vfat e che in windows basta che lo inserisco e funziona, in particolare windows mi vede due partizioni una dove non c'è niente e l'altra dove ci sono i file.
Sotto linux non va. Ho provato a montarlo come monto normalmente altri dischi esterni ma niente da fare.

Che messaggio di errore ti da mount?
A me sembra che il log sia a posto, il kernel la tua periferica la vede

Mi dice che la periferica non esiste. Ho provato sia con hda1..n che con hdb1..n
Come faccio a vedere quale perifrisca scsi gli assegna.
Dal /var/log/message appare sdb però non va

di solito le periferiche usb sono mappate come /dev/sdax: prova con /dev/sda1 oppure da un'occhiata in /dev

E se invece di andare a tentativi non guardi dmesg come ti ho detto?

In ogni caso anche un fdisk -l /dev/sdb può essere un output interessante

Prova a montare /dev/sg0

In ogni caso, se non hai ravanato con le regole di udev, e se non hai matto un fdisk su quel lettore per cui hai questa interessante tabella delle partizioni:
