PZoned: I'm not really sure what's causing your fps issues. Mine runs perfectly on regular wine (I don't have sound enabled, so I can't verify that aspect). No fps issues, good graphics quality, cinematics play fine. Are you on an ati card? I've heard several reports that cedega runs more smoothly with ati equipment than regular wine. Also, you might want to try running it in windowed mode at your fullscreen resolution (like I do). It seems to give a nice boost to performance, and that could fix your problem.

I run both as well right now I am cedega because wine's dsound is bugged. I been trying to trace the bug with the tips from winehq since it might be the chipset. I have a new comp on the way.

wine
faster fps by about 5 fps on avg
true texture color sharpness
free
Handles high population areas better.

cedega
faster hd loads
sound was fixed about 3 months ago.
has D3D for ati guys

ATI guys stick to cedega. Until they release some sort of stable opengl drivers.
Correct me if I am wrong does any one have wine -opengl WoW.exe running on ati with out artifacts or corruption?

I'm trying to work with the wine guys to resolve the alsa issues; stay tuned for further updates on that front.

Hello there,

I downloaded today CVS from WineX and tried to launch WoW. After i got unusable results using D3D i used Opengl-Mode and everything was fine.. The game patched (from EU Final Client) to the current client version.
After restarting WoW i have a very dark Main Menue (can't see the Textboxes and Buttons)

Has anybody a idea about that?

Hi,

Some questions concerning the very first post:
- I have a running installation of WoW(-eu) on my mounted winxp-harddisk, is there a way to copy it to ~/somewhere and let it run thru wine?
- I don't like buying cedega, is there a way to play WoW in classic wine?

Regs
Rob

EDIT: Skip the cedega question -- I use cedega_cvs now.
EDIT2: Solved my problems! Thanks!

Hi, an other little question, any idea why I get this?

yeri@spirit mnt $ wine cdrom1/Installer.exe
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system32\\" is not accessible.

there's a window that pop ups with "Cannot run the installer. You might be out of harddisk space".

I guess there something wrong in my config.
When I updated wine, my ~/.wine/config dissapeared?! so I used the cedega config for wine.

this is probably the problem, it could be cedega is using internal variables to get directory for system and such.

check your config file :)

I can't find a ~/.wine/config file either. I haven't updated wine in a long time until now, and it's just gone.

Question: Has anyone found that Cedega v4.3 disconnects you from server consistently after about 1-1.5 hours of play?

New problems are on their way:
- When switching to nvidia's glx cedega does not start anymore, I simply stay on my desktop and the process consumes runtime. Anyone got a similar problem?
- The framerate is 1-3 fps using an NVIDIA GeForce FX-5200 (guess it uses d3d). How do I increase this?
- When quitting from the game (via menu-button quit) cedega does not seem to quit correctly and
I keep on seeing the login screen. Any idea how to correct that?
- Trying to start the game with "-opengl" simply pops up a requester saying that the ogl-hardware couldn't be initialized.

Thanks to much of the info posted here, I was happily playing WoW in d3d mode under cedega 4.2.1 on my amd64 build... That is until I emerged cedega 4.3, after which I could only play in opengl mode (which is fine, except d3d mode looks better, at least on my card (6600gt), and more importantly certain things like the targetting circle doesn't work under opengl). Trying to start up in d3d mode resulted in the "World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3D acceleration." dialog.

At any rate, I just figured out how to fix my lack of d3d after a couple hours of hacking on it. Taking about my 20th random shot in the dark, I modified the [DllOverrides] section of ~/.transgaming/config, adding the line:
Code:
"d3d9"         = "builtin, native"

And now it works again! Not sure why it got lost from the config, but passing it on in case it helps anyone else.

I also tried getting it to work under Point2Play, but finally gave up on that, as WoW would crash on startup with an illegal acccess error.

Also, I'm curious about one other thing. Everyone says to use glxgears to determine if hardware support is working OK. My glxgears reports 200fps, but obviously hardware acceleration is working in WoW - I've got all the options turned up to max at 1600x1200 and am seeing frame rates of anywhere between 20-70 fps.

Happy gaming!!

Baer: Try using regular wine since you have an nvidia card. Also, neither versions (as far as I know) quit properly.

scotte: To determine whether you have direct rendering, simply check the output of glxinfo. Glxgears gives somewhat random performance.

I'll try and post my wine config somewhere soon for people to copy.

As for the new thread, I asked Deathwing00 to split this from the old one (And he did a great job! Thanks again Deathwing00!!!) because the middle 13 pages or so were obsolete and pretty much useless as a result of recent wine/cedega advances. The only posts in this thread now are ones that I thought would actually be useful to people wanting to get WoW running, as opposed to the ancient posts of me attempting to get WoW running in the pre-open beta days. So now you can actually read through the whole thing, and it should be much more effective.

Turn your Texture Detail all the way to Low as well as your View Distance (forgot the name). And this won't even help that much.

Think of it this way: Pieces of armor and weaponry each have textures that need to be loaded and they're loaded on the fly whenever a player walks by or enters your field of view. Now consider the fact that when 1 or 5 people cross your path, you get a slight hiccup as the texture memory is loaded so you can see accurately what they are wearing. Forcefeed yet another fact that Iron Forge has the only Alliance Auction House on one side and the Bank on the other, and that about a hundred people idle there and another 150 or so are doing business. What happends when you get close? A fuggin data explosion.

Best thing to do is aim yourself at a wall nearby, set it to auto run. Run into the zone and go watch your favorite episode of Iron Chef. By the time it's done, so should all the loading be done as well and you can move about the cabin freely.

Hope this explains it.

(I'm seriously wondering why Orgrimmar doesn't seem to have this problem)

PostPosted: Mon Mar 21, 2005 7:06 pm    Post subject: Mini-map issues Reply with quote

So, I'm running Cedega 4.2-1 on my FC3 box, with a really bad video thingie, ATI Radeon Mobility something. It runs fine, but I have one main problem.

I'm not running WoW with the -opengl switch, but I crash out when I enter buildings with the mini-map on. Should this be happening? Can I fix it? And if not, how does one apply the patch to have the mini-map default to off, so I can sleep in inns? If I do, the game won't let me load my char (it crashes right after the blue loading bar fills), and I have to call my friend on a windoze box and have him take me outside.
I found a mod called HideMiniMapFromStart, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Heard of it?

Thanks in advance!

Nikkichu: If you read the actual howto on the first page of this thread, you will find that your question has been answered.

I have read the how-to. I am NOT using opengl mode. I can't even run the game in -opengl. Is there something I am missing?

update: Used the cosmos fix and failed (crashed upon entering building with mini-map on), even though still unable to use -opengl... will inspect to see if I didn't do it right.

update2: unless this doesn't match yours, I should have cosmos closing the minimap on entering buildings.

Code:
<Scripts>
                        <OnLoad>
                                Minimap.timer = 0;
                                        ToggleMinimap();
                                Minimap_Update();
                                this:RegisterEvent("MINIMAP_ZONE_CHANGED");
                        </OnLoad>
                        <OnEvent>
                                Minimap_Update();
                        </OnEvent>
                </Scripts>

Update 3, final: I decided to use cosmos, and have the minimap only on when I moused over it. That's going to have to work for me. Thanks for the idea to use cosmos.

Okay... that last post i made was on my friend's computer. I just got WoW, and here is what i'm encountering

Wine and Cedega:
Terrible ALSA quality (do i need to use ALSA? or does OSS crash?)
Excellent Cinematics

Wine:
Really Really Fast
Random crashes
Crashes on Exit

Cedega:
much slower (maybe around 25-30fps in large areas)
Game hangs on exit
Direct3d is really slow, OpenGL is quite faster (but not as fast as WINE)

I would like to use Wine... but the crashes make it unplayable (after about 10 minutes). I have the newest NVIDIA drivers and the newest versions of Wine and Cedega.

I just want to thank the op as this thread got me up and running and back into WoW. I gave it up a while ago because I got sick and tired of having that nasty Windows XP install on my hard drive =) Now with the new wine, it runs like a charm.

The new World of Warcraft patch just went live 1.3.0-us, and it seems my version of wine [20050310 from portage] will no longer load WoW.exe -opengl. I could never open it using d3d, I just get an #132 error, but when I try with -opengl I get the following error.

Does anyone else get this error:

Code:

I get the same error also with the new patch and latest wine. This is ironic too, because just last night (and 2 posts above) I was so excited that I got it working. Kind of sucks considering I just reactivated my account last night. LoL, such is my luck.

I've got exactly the same error (however it does not spam anything in console), seems like the patch is breaking something... I've tried to move my game installation folder, erase .wine/, start wine to rebuilt my .wine/ folder, moving back game installation... but is doesn't work.

This is what is posted in wowerror on startup:
