This is very annoying...
When I remove my USB Headset(Plantronics DSP-300), my keyboard locks up. The mouse still works but I cannot type anything. I first thought this could be because my keyboard was on USB as well but now I've attached it to the PS/2 port and now it still happens.
This only happens if something related to sound is running, for example when KMixer/arts or TeamSpeak client is running. If nothing is using any of the sound devices(I've also got a SB-Live/EMU10K1) the keyboard doesn't lock up.
Any ideas on what might be causing this? _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

I just duplicated the problem. How are you getting it back, just turning your computer off and then back on manually?
I have logitech usb headset, and a ps2 keyboard. I have UHCI, EHCI and OHCI compiled in the kernel. And usb sound as built in and the alsa usb sound device as a module. I wonder if rmmod the modules first would prevent that from happening? _________________ Join the adopt an unanswered post initiative today |

after rebooting I tried using rmmod ::
In the console I plugged the usb in, and i rmmod audio and then unplugged the usb and the keybaord still worked.
I tried just plugging in the usb and unplugging it and the keyboard still worked.
I went into X and plugged in the usb ran rmmod audio and unplugged the keyboard and the keyboard still worked
I plugged the usb in and then played audio with the headset , stoped the audio and unplugged it and the keyboard still worked.
So know I can't even duplicate the problem. Weird. One difference though on this reboot I didn't have the usb plugged in and when starting X i ddn't have the usb plugged in. Maybe that caused it?
I will have to test that out tonight b/c now I have to goto classes and then work. _________________ Join the adopt an unanswered post initiative today |

Hmmz, I'm not sure what exactly causes it.
It happens when I'm in KDE and unplug the headset, it doesn't happen when i'm in XFCE4 and unplug the headset.
I always load the snd-usb-audio driver at boot using the alsasound rc-script, I suppose my problem doesn't happen if i unload that module first but that's not the idea of USB.
It just seems USB can easily wreck the whole system. Yesterday I accidently pulled the USB cable out of my printer and the whole computer locked up. ![Sad :(](images/smiles/icon_sad.gif) _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

I am running openbox 3.1 and I had that problem the firt time I removed it, but I haven't had a problem with any of my usb devices locking up the system (smart card reader and usb headset) _________________ Join the adopt an unanswered post initiative today |

Hello,
I had the same problem that my laptop keyboard got blocked with I unplugged my usb headset. But I just found out that it doesn't happen when 'kmix' is not running or that you can unblock the keyboard by quiting kmix...
Very strange.

Hi,
I just came across this thread whilst researching a problem in getting a USB headset to work with Skype.
Yes, I'm getting the same problem on two different machines (one running kernel 2.6.7-win4lin-r6, the other running 2.6.9-win4lin-r7). I got the headset running fine with Skype, but it locked up the keyboard when I unplugged the headset. This happened on both machines, with both USB and PS2 keyboards. Also, after this the system failed to accept any new USB device being plugged in (including plugging the headset back in).
I found this only happened if the headset was plugged in on startup. If I booted the machine without the headset and then plugged it in after it had booted up, then there was no problem. I could plug and unplug the headset as much as I wanted without any trouble. Presumably this is the diference between whether it was handled by hotplug or coldplug? Could that be a clue to fixing the trouble? |
