Hi, I installed gentoo and love it so far but I have no sound at all.
lspci gives "Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 04)"
But How do I make it work now ? Is there something to activate in the kernel or something ? |

i think the es1370 drivers could help (he is the most similar to your chip)
you'll find it in
Device drivers - Sound - Avanced Linux Sound Architecture - PCI Devices - (Creative) Ensoniq AudioPCI 1370
or
Device drivers - Sound - Open Sound System - Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1370) (NEW)
if you want to use OSS
hope this helps _________________ l'alcool est un ennemi...

I recompiled the kernel with the first driver you pointed to.
At kde startup, I get a message saying /dev/dsp doesn't exist. In KDE configuration center, I have 'NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG' infront of Audio Devices... 'No sound cards' also.
What does this mean ? |

I have no certain answer for you but I do have a handy cheat that may help...
Grab a Knoppix .iso and burn it, then boot up and watch the excellent automagic configuration of Knoppix set things up for you.
Once you are running you can figure out a few things with virtually no pain:
If your hardware is easily supported- if it works in Knoppix you have ZERO worries.
Which modules/drivers/parameters need to be set.
And so on.
While my preferred distro is of course Gentoo, generally speaking, I do always make sure I have a few other distros around for testing and so on.
Knoppix- or actually Overclockix- is an absolute MUST for me as it is an easy way to troubleshoot and repair virtually any halfway modern system and/or os. |
