I know that when doing RAID you shouldn't put two drives on one IDE channel since it would hurt performance and reliability. But what if the two drives aren't part of the same RAID array? Can you use four IDE controllers to drive two separate RAID5 with 4 drives in each?
Or is it just asking for trouble? If one drive goes bad, would you risk both arrays? If two drives on different IDE controllers go bad, could you lose ALL data on BOTH arrays? |

Prefect47,
If you allow that one drive going bad prevents all data transfer on that IDE cable, then you have lost the redundancy on both arrays, one because the drive has failed, the othe because the failed drive is preventing teh other drive being kept up to date.
Linux kernel raid does not require that the the drives are the same size and type but its a good idea to make sure that the partitions that contribute to the raid array are the same size. _________________ Regards,

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail. |

Thought so. Means I have to look for a new mainboard for my server - the old one has no onboard LAN, or SATA controllers, or more than two IDE channels, or onboard GFX. All in all, a pretty crappy board for server use... =)
Regarding your sig, I am in neither group. I don't make backups but have had a HD fail, but it was a 850Mb 3.5" drive I hardware hacked into my Amiga 1200... |
