/dev/eth0 does not exist after reboot.

After reboot, /dev/eth0 does not exist. I did:

rc-update add net.eth0 default

which stated that:

net.eth0 already installed in runlevel default;skipping.

Is there a package that I should have installed and missed or what's going on here?

humm .. I'm sure I don't know what I'm talking about .. but

when I do ifconfig from the liveCD I get output for eth0 and lo, after I reboot, I only get output for lo. maybe that is clearer..

I thought that eth0 was a device .. hence /dev/eth0 .. not so ?

great search forum :

/dev/eth0 -- wrong -- no wonder I didn't find anything with the search looking for this ..

Your post is related to this post, i.e. you don't have proper support in your kernel for your nic.

Is this because of something I neglected to select in the "make menuconfig" menu, or because I neglected to emerge the correct driver?

So your card is NOT detected.
I assume you have built your kernel by hand.
What's you card and what do you have checked in the 'Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)' section?

Could have 'lsmod' while on LiveCD to determine what module you need...

lspci does not exist in kernel and can't be emerged due to current issue. output form livecd(and I assume you only mean the nic output):

If I may ask .. how do you figure something like that out?

and do you check any of the sibdirs uder that?
New bus config
UsePCI shared mem for nic regs
use napi rx polling

?

I might have actually looked at the chips on my network card to see what they said, but I can't remember if I did or even if that helped me -- sometimes that does help, like my ATA PCI card says Promise 20267 on it.

Most likely, I booted off a LiveCD and ran lsmod to see what modules the LiveCD was using, then cross checked that list in menuconfig.

Or, I might have done just what you did -- ask someone

Can't really remember what I did for sure -- been a good while ago.

As for the subdirs stuff, what I showed you is all I am using. That doesn't mean I have the absolute best setup, but it has worked flawlessly and consistently for me.

make && make modules_install

it didn't take very long .. ?

and I should I have to re - emerge everything I did during the initial install following the install guide? I'm thinking no but I thought I'd just ask.

I typically feel like garbage when I realize I've asked stupid questions, but I find myself doing it so frequently....

I rebooted and got the same messages on startup and

output from:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
says:

*Bringing eth0 up via DHCP... [!!]

startup error says same with more :

*ERROR: Problem starting needing services.
* "netmount" was not started
