I just bought an amd 64. the problem is i have no time to make a fresh gentoo installation for the next weeks - so what do i have to do to get my "old" installation running on the new CPU?

which kernel properties do i need to run 32bit software? which cflags should i use for new compilations on this system?

and what about grub? i heard i need a special version for an amd64 - is this true? so i have to compile an amd64-grub and put it on a floppy before i remove my old athlon from my system? otherwise i couldn't boot it with the new amd64 - right?

the other question is: how much better would a real 64bit installation perform? how fast would you switch if you had no time 8O ?

If you go 32bit with it, you dont need to change anything. Other than change the cpu-family in the kernel to athlon64 (this is optional since you can use it like athlon-xp).
If you want to get it all 64bit, then there is alot of changes to be done
The CFLAGS could be "-O3 -march=k8 -pipe", yes grub need a "special" version grub-static. You can do all changes from the live-cd, and boot into your system when you're done.
It will not perform so much better, if you're not working with heavy calculations or something similar. I have already had a 64bit installation on my box, but there is (according to me) to many things that's not working with 64bit yet. So I'm now running my AMD64 as 32bit, and I'm pleased with it
But I promise you'll hear other arguments on this from others, this is just my opinion
Hope it helped a little
Cheers
