Is it safe to delet everything in the /var/tmp/portage directory? It seems to be quite huge and is eating up what little space I have . _________________ Postcount ++ |

Short answer: yes! But don't do it during a build/merge operation. |

man oh man how this directory and the /usr/portage/distfiles gave me tons of space... why aren't files deleted by emerge automatically after an installation has been performed? or perhaps emerge clean should do it

Yeah, that wouldn't be such a bad idea.  _________________ Postcount ++ |

They are not deleted because not every updated ebuild requires an updated download, and constant re-downloading for 56k users is not the most exciting thing _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |

I remember those frustrating line-drops and downloads just getting to 3k/s . My heart goes out to al 56K users. _________________ Postcount ++ |

that's true for /usr/portage/distfiles, but the /var/tmp/portage is just a temporary dir, with all sorts of compilation junk in there, especially after a failed emerge. emerge clean (or another option) should probably clean it out... (or your regular /tmp, /var/tmp cleaning process at boot :)
