I have just ordered an Athlon 64 and a new mobo.
Currently I am running on an Athlon XP 2000 (Socket A).
I do not need the 64-bit mode extensions for now nor I would like to put up with the software issues this platform still experiences (most notably flash - hey I am an user not a hacker). I would like to know what needs to be changed when compiling a kernel for Athlon 64 so that 32-bit mode is the default? Which cpu I need to select ? I do not feel like recompiling the whole system at the moment. Would it be just possible to recompile the kernel and necessary modules? Thanks a lot in advance for any answers.

The 32 bit system you have will work on the Athlon 64 without any changes. If you want to optimize for performance, that is another story...

Thank you. Optimization will come in time. I will propably do a fresh chrooted gentoo install and recompile everything from the ground up, but at the moment I simply haven't got the time to spare at the moment to fiddle around with it.

I guess I should qualify my statement to say that your new motherboard probably has different audio, network, and disk controllers. Build a new kernel including drivers for those on your Athlon XP.

obviously... I have already recompiled the kernel for the new mobo, just waiting for it to be delivered.
