[SOLVED] Crash on gettext while emerge -e system

I'm trying to do a stage-1 install on a Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 512 MB RAM, 200GB hdd (no partition larger than 80GB).

When doing emerge --emptytree system, the compile just crashes. I'm not sure where since my screen goes blank and I can't see where exactly it crashes.

When switching the CHOST variable from i686 to i586, I don't have this problem. Any suggestions?

Never __ever__ change the CHOST after setting it up __before__ the bootstrap. That means, you can only manually specify a CHOST if you do a stage1-install.

To help we need the output of 'emerge info'. But I would give the advice to start over again because you obviously changed the CHOST, so there's a high chance that you screwed your system entirely.

I didn't change the CHOST setting afterwards. I guess I should have clarified this. When doing a stage 1 install with CHOST as i686, it crashes. When doing a completely new stage 1 install with CHOST set at i586, the install does not crash.

I hand-copied this emerge info output, hopefully I didn't miss anything. I also noticed that there are several USE flags I did not set but are nonetheless set. Is that normal? (like berkdb, bitmap-fonts, cups, fortran, and some others).

1. It's normal that there are additional USE-flags because some are in as default. So for example if you want to take out cups (because you don't have a printer), you have to add -cups to your USE-flags in /etc/make.conf.

2. The info looks fine so far. Two tips for the CFLAGS (the tips will not help against the error): a) You don't have to specify -mcpu if you specify -march. -march includes -mcpu. b) Add -pipe to the CFLAGS. It will speed up compiling.

3. We still do not know which packages causes the crash. So take a look in '/var/log/emerge.log'. What's the last package mentioned? Does it even exist?

4. Just to be sure: Give me the content of '/proc/cpuinfo'.

Instead of typing you could use a floppy/USB-stick/vFat-partition to get content from the LiveCD to your internet-capable system. :wink:

I finally figured out the problem ... switching the memory stick to a different slot did the trick. I completed a stage 1 compile without a hitch. Thanks again for the help though!

Then you should check the memory with memtest86. Bad memory is the worst you can have in a machine. It's better then to buy a new stick.

Runninng memtest wouldn't hurt (well, it does take time if you want to do it properly), but most likely the board is a bit finnecky with regard to dual channel and memory configuration. The ram is probably ok.
