Within your xorg.conf do you have
Code:
BusID "PCI:1:0:1"

if so, replace it with
Code:
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

and see if that works ... fglrxconfig always gives me PCI:1:0:1 and I get a fatal no screens error myself until I change it to PCI:1:0:0.

Couple of questions:

a) did you compile (i.e not a module) support for Radeon in your kernel's menuconfig, if so it needs to be removed.
b) have you upgraded kernels lately, and if so did you re-emerge the ati-drivers?

it seems i've got the same problem with error 104.
i've tried the "X -configure" and "xorgconf" with no results.
perhaps the radeon 9550se (i'm using) isn't supported yet ( a friend told me, that could be the problem). is there an alternative driver i can use? i don't need the 3d-support and so on, just need the standard for my studies. and what would i have to do to use it? (i'm a reel noob in linux)

I get this same problem, I have a Compaq Presario 2700 with 512 megs of ram, ATI Radeon M6 video card. I had that 104 error and I emerged the ATI drivers. Now it still won't work. I can't even run Xorg -configure or xorgcfg. I do have the Radeon compiled in the kernal (2.6). Is that the issue? Thanks for the help.:D

That could be the problem.. I'll try to recompile my kernel.

No, thats my first try installing gentoo... Do I have to re-emerge ati-drivers after compiling a new kernel?

Thanks so far,

Yes you have to re-emerge after upgrading your kernel, so that the ati modules get put in the right /libs/module/... directory for the corresponding kernel. In the meantime, once you get your current kernel straightened out be sure to re-emerge the ati-drivers.

Oh, and don't forget to run opengl-update ati afterwards. Be sure to also reboot to your new kernel prior to installing the ati drivers.

After emerge Ati-driver, do
Code:
modprobe fglrx

Then try startx, if that goes well, put fglrx in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

You techinically don't have to do that. When you start X, it will load the fglrx module if it is not already loaded. I use the ati-drivers and do not have fglrx in my kernel-2.6 file :) Kernel-2.6 is really more for making sure certain hardware is available to the kernel prior to the kernel probing for what hardware exists on bootup -- such as network cards. The kernel will see your video card without having fglrx loaded (same goes if you use the kernel's radeon module instead).
