I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 and can't get the sound to work correctly. I built in ALSA support into the kernel, and attempting to emerge alsa-drivers confirms this. When in the console, the system will beep corrently, but when I start KDE, the sound dies, and I get an error that /dev/dsp can not be found, and audio will be routed to /dev/null. Changing the KDE sound preferences from Autodetect to ALSA and specifying different sound devices does nothing. Does anyone have any insight on this? |

I had the same problem... When I upgraded to KDE 3.4 the answer was simply to include artsd and alsa in my USE flags, and compile KDE with that. All went fine from there. |

I appreciate the advice, and will try it, once I can get KDE 3.4 installed. I don't know how to do it! I've searched around trying to find about emerging packages that are masked, and when I did, it fails. What command should I run to make it upgrade? I'm new to emerging packages that are not just available. |

Thanks. It ended up being a kernel mixconfig (noo, I know), and its square now. Thanks though, I'll upgrade anyway. |
