I really need help on viewing a .wmv.
I have tried
-mplayer
Code:

tdfx_vid: Can't open /dev/tdfx_vid: No such file or directory
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [dshow] DirectShow video codecs
Decoder supports the following YUV formats: YUY2 IYUV UYVY YV12 YVYU I420 YVU9
Decoder is capable of YUV output (flags 0x7f)
VDec: vo config request - 160 x 120 (preferred csp: Packed YUY2)
[PP] Using codec's postprocessing, max q = 4.
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is undefined - no prescaling applied.
VO: [3dfx] 160x120 => 160x120 Planar YV12
Couldn't open /dev/3dfx

-xine
(
It just says there isn't a demixer or demuxer or something
)
-totem
(
Says there is no plugin
)
-vlc
Code:
VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus
Remote control interface initialized, `h' for help
[00000192] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `wma2'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000225] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV2'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

And possibly a few more.
Why does this happen???

Do you have win32codecs installed?

Add win32codecs as a USE flag to your /etc/make.conf, and run emerge -pv mplayer. This should show you what USE flags will get used when building mplayer, and hopefully pull in win32codecs ebuild as well.

M$ is using "viral marketing" to promote their codecs. Indeed, they kind of "steathly buy" exclusive rights for them in "attention focused area" in order to push the "average joe" to adopt them.
It is bit like apple who has almost exclusive rights on trailers to promote quicktime movies. No sooner than last WE, a friend of mine asked me if she could use an iPod shuffle with the linux system I installed her. I said of course yes(mp3 encoding and in Europe software patents are and will be illegal), but I do recommend you to buy something else: they are many others higher quality and doing vorbis which is the best audio codec... she said no, she wants the iPod shuffle-->fashion victim or marketing victim.
Whatever, h.264/MPEG4-part10/AVC is the visually and mathematically BEST codec. wmv is visually and mathematically a low quality codec. Theora is only at it's beginning and will outperform "standard MPEG4" at a start and will be used as a non patent encumbered codec (soon in Europe, if everything goes ok, we won't care about those stupid software patents for good).
It is a very ugly method, but everybody knows M$ is a specialist of those methods (for instance, "XXX recommends M$® Windows® XP Professional" for almost all brands of notebooks).
The target is "the average joe". So, if you want things to change you know where additional work has to be done... 8).
