After like 5 hours of my time, I can't figure this out.

The damn thing won't start up correctly if I don't have a queue directory in /var/qmail/.
Now I have a backup queue directory from when I tried using qmail before (I switched to postfix, which has since broken on me and thought I would try qmail once again).

The thing is...the ebuild doesn't seem to be making this directory. And if I copy my backup over, I get this:
dumpsterdawg qmail # qmail-start
alert: cannot start: unable to open mutex

But if I don't and leave it as-is, qmail-inject complains.

I have everything else working (namely imap stuff) but if I can't get to my mailbox, what's the point?

Any thoughts on this? Why in God's name does this stuff have to be so complicated, with how-to's being so skimpy? I am very grateful for the docs, but docs of the form "do this do this do that" don't seem to be very helpful when things go wrong :) I have to admit that, other than following a how-to like a monkey, I don't really have much of a clue as to what is going on here.

Disgruntled....it's late...I need sleep :)

there is a tool at http://pyropus.ca/software/queue-repair/
which can help you to make a new queue directory.

hope this helps!
