I'm about to install a 2nd NIC in my Homeserver (an Athlon XP clocked at 550MHz, so it's not that muscular at all...). I've got a pile of cheapo-100MBit NICs at hand, incorporating chipsets from VIA and RealTek (Rhine III and 8139 respectively). From what I've read on the WWW, the Realtek really, really sucks. (e. g. here). This and several other comments sparked my stereotypical mistrust against bargain ethernet-cards, and I'd like to have your advice on what chip to use - is the Rhine III even crappier than the infamous RTL8139, or not?

Both work perfectly fine for me, best bet for you is to try em out for yourself that way you'll get a more accurate comparison to the tasks you intend to do over your network.
