No. You have an i686 system, not an x86_64 system. I emphatically recommend stage 3, not stage 1 or 2. That would make stage3-i686-2005.0.tar.bz2 the stage tarball of choice.

that all depends on how long you have, have a read of the handbook, that will tell you what the 3 stages do. OIf you are new to gentoo (which you seem to be) i suggest stage 3.

Also, you would only use a amd64 if you have a 64bit amd processor. A Duron is a 32bit processor so you would use x86.

Considering he doesn't even know what type of cpu he has, maybe he should try another distribution like knoppix or ubuntu first. Gentoo is NOT for linux beginners.

Confusion to new linux people as far as which arch to use can be difficult because there are some around gentoo's land that many people haven't even heard of before. On that note, I think that if drkangl543 sticks to it he can learn alot from using Gentoo :)

but its not his lack of linux experience, its his lack of computer knowlege. We can give him linux help but i think he's going to feel silly saying "what kind of computer have i got?" Even though he shouldn't.
