I don't see a "screen" section in your config. What did you use to generate your config file? Have you read these two docs yet?

try to build a kernel manually and make sure that you don't build DRM modules!! then remerge ati drivers and check again

Isn't there a way to do it with the genkernel? I'm not so comfortable compiling my own kernel.

why? compiling takes much less time and you will only have the modules that you need.

Don't build DRM at all, it isn't required. You need /dev/agpgart support and AGP chipset support for your motherboard (eg if you have a VIA board, select VIA Chipset Support). Build the AGP options as modules rather than compiling them in.

The ATI Radeon option under graphics support refers to a framebuffer driver, not the DRM driver. It will (usually) work with the fglrx driver, so it's up to you whether you want it or not. If you don't want a framebuffer/bootsplash etc, it can be disabled.

First you will have to make sure DRM is disabled under Device Drivers => Character Devices and your chipset is selected in /dev/agpgart.

Issue following command as root to recompile:
Code:
#genkernel --udev all --menuconfig

Reboot with your new kernel and
Code:
#emerge ati-drivers

Change
Code:
 Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes"
to
Code:
  Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and you should be g2g.
