If you deleted with "rm" you might try "unrm"
http://freshmeat.net/projects/unrm/
PS. I deleted the first post, pointing to an useless software (at least for you), sorry for the inconvenience. |

I Have a one week image of the failed hard disk .
could I take the disk connect it to a linux working machine and transfer file from the image to the failed disk ??
Do I have to modify a file on the copy station to allow him to recognize the failed hard disk ?
thanks for your support |

Is it just that the /etc directory has been accidentally deleted, or is there something physically wrong with the disk? If it's just the former, you should be able to access your data after booting from a livecd. You may even be able to recover the system by following the usual install procedure, but only unpacking the /etc directory from the stage1 tarball, for example with:
Code: |
# cd /mnt/gentoo
# tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/gentoo/stage1-x86-1.4_rc2.tbz2 ./etc
|
Then after chrooting and reconfiguring things as you like, an "emerge -e world" will (taking a rather long time) reinstall your packages together with their configuration files. Beware this is just an idea, I've not tested if this will work. |

There is also e2undel which sounds quite a bit better than unrm, although I have never used either yet so I don't know for sure. _________________ Shoot Pixels Not People
