Had cups and ghostscript working flawless forever.

All of a sudden ghostscript continually began crashing on pages with images. If I select this forum page, (I'm in konqueror), and print, I select preview and it begins to render and then get ghostscript error box with no info.

If I do the same, but select no images in the HTML setting section of the kdeprint dialog, works OK.

I have emerged all unstable and stable amd64 packages of ghostscript in portage and all the same thing. I have emerged ghostscript-afpl also and the same thing happens.

The odd things is this worked perfect for 2 years and I don't know what has changed. I tried installing ghostscript with USE="DEBUG" but that didn't provide any useful info. CUPS debug level doesn't help since ghostscript doesn't get to the point of pass the file off to CUPS.

Any suggestions or people with similar problems?

I'm also having this problem with
Code:
app-text/ghostscript-7.07.1-r9  +X -cjk +cups -emacs +gtk 0 kB
. Any ideas? It's stumped me.

ghostscript is segfaulting.
Code:
gs[26714]: segfault at 0000000000000008 rip 00000000005b6870 rsp 00007fffffc58a98 error 4
gs[26713]: segfault at 0000000000000008 rip 00000000005b6870 rsp 00007fffffbcbca8 error 4

Any ideas why?

This may be related to bug #89089, however, that does not solve the problem for me. ghostscript continues to crash on pages with images. Bizarrely, if I use the preview function of kdeprint so that I see the generated page as it is created some images can sometimes make it. E.g. printing this page of the forums gets the gentoo forum logo in the top left but then crashes (possibly when it reaches the first avatar).

I finally got around to patching gnu-ghostscript-8.16 with the gdi driver I needed for my Samsung printer, and like you everything works perfectly now.

While ghostscript-gnu is much better, I'm still having crashes on a few pdf files. For example, this rebate offer:

http://65.119.30.151/uploadfilesfornewegg/rebate/SH/antec17-103-931Oct20Oct3105gy11.pdf

This prints fine on my 32-bit laptop, but crashes ghostscript on my amd64.

I checked it out and that pdf fails to print anything.
Turning on debugging output for cups it seems this problem is a different problem then the image causing one we were discussing.
Here is the error from cups:
Code:
sh: line 1: 27380 Floating point exceptiongs '-dBATCH' '-dPARANOIDSAFER' '-dQUIET' '-dNOPAUSE' '-sDEVICE=gdi' '-sOutputFile=/dev/fd/3' '/dev/fd/0' 3>&1 1>&2

As a quick workaround, install Adobe Acrobat Reader (7.0.1.1), it is in portage. It will print this PDF OK.

With the last ghostcript-esp, all is running well with a x86_64 system :
Quote:
* app-text/ghostscript-esp :
[ ] 7.07.1-r7 (0)
[ ] 7.07.1-r8 (0)
[ ~ ] 7.07.1-r10 (0)
[ I] 8.15.1 (0)

This packet is still hard-masked however.

nb : with the ghostcript-gnu, the pdf files can only be printed with acrobat reader and the pictures don't appear with other pdf readers.
