hello!
for some time i own a 1gb usbkey that identifies as 'usb key pro':
Code: | usb 1-3.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
scsi7 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 8
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Vendor: Model: USB DISK Pro Rev: PMAP
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
SCSI device sdb: 2012160 512-byte hdwr sectors (1030 MB)
sdb: assuming Write Enabled
sdb: assuming drive cache: write through
SCSI device sdb: 2012160 512-byte hdwr sectors (1030 MB)
sdb: assuming Write Enabled
sdb: assuming drive cache: write through
sdb: sdb1
Attached scsi removable disk sdb at scsi7, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
usb-storage: device scan complete |
some time ago i plugged that thingy into a windows-xp pc and (wow) it shows up as two different devices! there is the large chunk of 1gb and then there is a second device (recognized as floppy) with 1.4mb!
but that second one doesn't show up under linux!
i tried it on various linux-boxes with various architectures but all running gentoo, no usb-fdd.
is there a specific kernel option to access that small part?
thanks in advance,

Out of curiosity, what's the benefit of having two mount points to a 1GB USB disk drive when one of them is 1.4mb big? _________________ Watching sh*t scroll by for hours makes me a Linux expert overnight! |

modern pc's can boot from either usb-floppy (usb-zip) or from usb-harddisks. the usb-harddisk has an advantage as its geometry is not predefined as is the case with usb-floppys or usb-zips. but some older pc's cannot boot from usb-hd, so it would be nice to boot from that small usb-floppy a kernel that then recognizes the larger part. also, as i'm in server-business, i'm selling some servers that don't have floppies but my customers want to run windows on them but that nice and reliable piece of software doesn't even recognize a single modern raid controller, so you have to hit f6 during install and insert the driver-floppy. that's a bit hard without a floppy-drive but windows recognizes usb-floppies. that would make that part easier (no need to open up that server).
btw the two parts are not partitions but are hardware-defined. _________________ bill who? micro what? |

I have a 256mb device, in windows It the small "floppy partition". It actually contains win32 software to encrypt the second partition etc...
never shows up on linux. What we call the "second" larger partition always gets sdX1 |

exactly that is the case! but the win32 software can be deleted and the small partition can be treated like any floppy, i already wrote disk-images to it and booted, but do i really need windows to access that part of the usbkey? _________________ bill who? micro what? |
