Strange problem with games group

I just emerged tuxracer and followed the instructions to add myself to the games group using gpasswd -a.

Despite this I am still unable to access the /usr/games and /usr/share/games directories. In /etc/group I am part of the games group and groups <myname> lists games among my groups. I am completely baffled. Is there any command I need to issue to "refresh" group definitions?

tried to logout and login again ?
if you type "id <username>" can you see games in there ?
