|
|
I just installed Gentoo, using the 2005.0 live CD, on a system of mine. Everything went swimmingly (after I realized that I had accidentally left in a "debug" USE-flag, which caused some weird looking problems) until I rebooted.
A) As the system booted up, I repeatedly got messages that my DMA was turned off, even though I had turned i on during the install and enabled it in my kernel. What gives? How can I fix this?
B) More importantly: at the login prompt, I typed in 'root' and the password I had set during the install. This returned a 'login incorrect.' I popped the live CD back in, and tried to reset the password, but it didn't make any difference. I have no idea why this might be happening... any clues? |

take a look at "/etc/securetty". it should look somehow like this:
Quote: | # /etc/securetty: list of terminals on which root is allowed to login.
# See securetty(5) and login(1).
vc/1
vc/2
vc/3
vc/4
vc/5
vc/6
vc/7
vc/8
vc/9
vc/10
vc/11
vc/12
tty1
tty2
tty3
tty4
tty5
tty6
tty7
tty8
tty9
tty10
tty11
tty12
tts/0

yes! that did it. now to figure out how to have DMA turned on for hda and hdb....
loki99: thanks for the suggestion. I just copied your example of /etc/securetty. Out of curiosity/desire to be more secure, what are the vc/1, vc/2 terminals? |

glad it helped!
what did you enable in your kernel? does it look like this:
Quote: | Device Drivers --->
ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->
[*] Use PCI DMA by default when available
[*] Enable DMA only for disks |
use "Enable DMA only for disks "also, it should help when DMA fails. and perhaps it also helps to take a look at this

vc stands for virtual console, which you find under F1 to F12, if thats what you mean. |
