My burning speed is between 1 - 20x when burning in k3b. My drive is 52x, and I set the speed to 52x but the burning is real slow. How can I increase it?

Have you checked to see if your burner has dma enabled?

Use hdparm -I /dev/hd?, as root. Look for a line like the following under Capabilities, the example is my DVD burner:
Code:
DMA: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2

Here the asterik shows which level of udma is set.

PS: don't use for example /dev/hda1, but instead /dev/hda.

Hmmm ... check this thread ... this person actually had the problem where the dma would turn off after loading a disc, but otherwise the dma was on!

Is this happening to you as well?

Ok, I got a new question, whats the easiest way to play a dvd using mplayer? do I need xine-ui? I tried opening video_ts.vob under the video_ts folder, but mplayer gave me this error:
Code:

too many video packets in the buffer

I need to do this obviously to play movies, but also to test if my drive is going fast enough to playback a dvd.

mplayer dvd://1

where 1 is the title, and you can like specify chapters afterwards , its in the manual,

if you have net in your use flags, then the same syntax works for http:// and mms:// , which is damn funky, especially with mencoder for rtsp://whaterver/
