|
|
Hi,
I download the universal installation CD and tried to install the 2005.0 distribution but am having a hardtime configuring the network interface. I tried recompiling the kernel at least 10 times with different options but to no avail. Interesting thing is when I booted up from the install CD, the network interface came up fine. Also, the GRUB bootup screen won't show the splash image or the GRUB menu. Instead the screen stays blank (the timeout interval) and then jumps into a really fuzzy screen booting up. Half way through, the screen becomes normal. Also tried different parameters with the grub.conf but not much success there either. The 1.4 release worked like a charm on my older PC and I am quite fustrated since it had been 3 days since I started the new install without any progress. Any help or info is much appreciated.

Can you post your grub.conf? _________________ Kris Edwards

Sounds like you dont have the right module loading for your net device or did not build it into the kernel. What type of network device is it. Also post your grub.conf if you can. |

If networking was working from the Live 2005.0 CD then boot from that and do a lsmod and see what modules are loading, then make sure you compiled the right NIC driver into or as a module in the kernel. If a module you may have to edit the /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 and add that module name in there so it loads up.
As for the grub not displaying the logo, check you grub.conf and see if you did a typo, also some video cards don't like the graphical grub display, for instance my Laptop doesn't like it, shows garbage text. |

Hi folks,
Thanks for all your help. After reading the answers carefully I did a make menuconfig and selected the Reverse Engineered nForce Ethernet support (Experimental) and recompiled the kernel. After booting up with the new kernel /dev/eth0 is properly configured now. At the moment I am emerging kde and once done will do the nVidia emerge to tackle the GRUB fuzzy display issue.
Again, thanks for all the help.

The nvidia driver isn't loaded until you start X, so emerging the driver will not help with any grub problems. _________________ What is the best [insert-type-of-program-here]? |

That's disappointing to know. GRUB displays fine on my old PC with nVidia Riva TNT and 2.4 kernel. I dual boot Gentoo and XP from 2 HDDs on that machine and am trying to replicate that on the new machine. The new PC has an onboard nVidia GeForce-4 MX card. Should I concentrate on the framebuffer to tackle this issue? If the GRUB menu doesn't pop up I won't be able to dual boot which is absolutely necessary for me. Further help is much appreciated. |

I haven't run into any problems with 2005.0, installing using BobP's sweet 1/3 guide. |

Try it without the splash screen (just comment out that line in grub.conf) it should work. It won't be as pretty, but at least it'll give you a working setup while you find a fix for the problem. _________________ What is the best [insert-type-of-program-here]? |

I will try that option. Thanks for the suggestion. Any ideas how to resolve the fuzzy screen during the bootup problem?
TIA. |
