If I boot into x, I can't switch to a text console using CTL+ALT+F1 (for example). There seems to be no error, it just doesn't happen. It's the same if I'm in the xdm login screen.

If I boot into text mode, I can do it, but not in X.

This seems to be regardless of wm (openbox, e17) or xdm thing (entrance, xdm). Hardware is a laptop - ibm thinkpad t42.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?
