|
|
Hello, I'm trying to install gentoo for my first time. I was having alot of problems with the installer downloading files from ibiblio (the downloads were always halting), so after reading a bit on here, I managed to change the download location... Now the problem I have is thta the downloads of all the packages are slow! (about 56k modem speed, even though i have 1500/300 cable modem service). Other computers on my network (windows machines) can access the same site (gatech) and download the same files in seconds, whereas the gentoo installer is going at 56k speeds.
The gentoo computer has two 3com network cards (one for cable modem, one for lan), and both appeared to be working when i set them up for dhcp (i could ping sites and everything).
Is there something I've missed that's possibly throttling my downloads? At this rate, it's going to take forveer to get a fully functional system...
Thanks for any insight that anyone can provide (I've used redhat and mandrake before, but ive read so much about gentoo that I've decided to try it, but so far, this isn't going well). |

the mirrors have been slow lately but it probably isn't a problem at you're end, the servers are just swamped |

Well, the reason i'm thinking theres a problem with something in gentoo is that my other computers here (on the same cable modem) can all download from the same mirror (just vie IE FTP) at very fast speeds, but the gentoo installer is going very slowly (it satrts out around 10K/s, then after about 200K, the speeds slow to 5K/s, and this has happened with each and every file the gentoo installer has downloaded). |

On that subject, is there any reliable fast mirrors for Gentoo? I'm on the west coast and the oregon state mirror seems to be pretty fast, but there files aren't up to date. ??? _________________ If you didn't see me do it, I didn't.

I just go to the download mirrors page (where you can get the CDs)
I emerge -p the package I want then look through the mirrors for the version I want
once I've found it on a fast source I d/l it to /usr/portage/distfiles |

I recently just re-installed gentoo on my router-box, and noticed the extemely slow speeds from ibiblio. I then consulted the forums and they told be to change what GENTOO_MIRRORS was set to. Go to your /etc/make.conf file, and edit it. Find the line that say GENTOO_MIRRORS="whatever" (whatever being whats already there), uncomment this line, and change where it says <your mirror here> to http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ . I found that this mirror is relatively fast (500 KB/s, but I'm on a 10000 kbps/1000 kbps cable modem, and used to get 1000 KB/s download from ibiblio). The mirror I gave above seems to be up to date as well. If the line GENTOO_MIRRORS does not exist, you can add it to your make.conf. The only thing I would to is remove that line once ibiblio gets back to speed, because ibiblio is the main mirror. Or, you can make the line read GENTOO_MIRRORS="my_mirror ibiblio" (where my_mirror is the mirror I gave, but a space in between that, and ibiblio's mirror). Hope this helps. |

I have heard that this sometimes happen with two 3Com cards in the same computer, could this be the case? _________________ Always make it as simple as possible, but no simpler

LOL, but no problem for the link. I am still cruising along at 500 KB/s, so I'm happy. No, the link is in the Netherlands. I guess the Netherlands is closer to me |

I thought it might be france cause I recognised a few words that looked french at the web page for the place. It is a school from what I gather? I am horrible with anything not english... well, actually include english in that too.
Kind of funny that the data would travel all the way across the atlantic to me faster than it would go from any of the other US mirrors...
I will have to see, if I ever get a spare machine if I can mirror the gentoo files, until my school gets pissed at my bandwidth usage atleast hehe
mathgod79, when portage downloads from ibiblio, I think it uses http port 80 and not ftp most of the time, correct me someone if I am wrong. Thus going ftp from ibiblio vs http could actually come from different machines and be why there is a discrepency. As for the two 3com cards idea, can you download from anywhere else using wget at speeds that are acceptable? such as pick a big file from your isp's http or ftp site and pull it down over the cable? |

That might be a good guess. Is there any reason why ibiblio is set to http by default?
Try adding this to your make.conf:
Code: | GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" |

Ya know, I was always reluctant to try those overseas (read: non-US) mirrors because of the distance involved, but that mirror from utwente does infact scream nicely.

Don't know for the first question, but with the ftp address I got 40k/sec while with http got only 30k/sec in (very unscientific) test I just conducted. |
