I'm in serious trouble getting my internet connection up and running with Gentoo. I use kppp as the "dialer" and it seems to work until i get a connection, when kppd says: "pppd died unexpectedly".
I've searched the forum, and found some tips about revompiling the kernel with "PPP support for async serial ports" which I have done, without any luck. I have no trouble getting the connection to work in Windows, so there is nothing wrong with rhe hardware or my account name/password.
Is there anyting else I should have done, except filling the right parameters to kppp? I have for example not touched anything in /etc/ppp. Is it necessary to do any configuration there?
I have tried to locate logfiles for the pppd or whatever, but I haven't found anything useful. Where might I find anything regarding this? (Yes, I'm new to this)
/Olof

I don't even know what you mean by "hsf", but my modem is a "US Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem".
I have by the way used it with Linux a couple of years ago, when I was using Suse (7.1).

HSF modems are modems with Conexant HSF chips, which are winmodems (most of them with fax also). I've had lots of issues with my hsf modem. If you emerge hsfmodem package then your is an HSF modem (that package is the driver).
If you did not knew about hsf then you probably is not one of them, but I asked because that driver is not free (you have to pay to use it without limitations) and the demo version has only the capability to use the modem under 14 kbps, which is slow and causes continuous line hangs like the one you described.
You can also check you kppp configuration. Make sure that you have the correct DNSs for your ISP, and also check that you set the option related to PPPD expiration time to the maximun. ![Very Happy :D](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |
