Are you not aware that under US law the copyright of anything newer than Disney's Mickey Mouse will never expire?

Quite a lot of them, as many countries have been around for a hell of a lot longer and thus had more chances to do good than the US has. Of course, they did a lot of bad, too, but you never asked about that, and the US has certainly done its fair share of bad things in its time.

You need history lessons.

But if it helps focus your thoughts, try:

In any given 300 year period of time, what country has done more good in the world than the US?

If it wasn't technically illegal, I'd suggest grabbing ZSNES and a couple of SNES roms off of amule or bittorrent. Good ones are all Mario titles, both Secret of Mana games and of course Zelda (among so many others). But that's illegal, so don't

if you make your own ROMs then its not :)

Yeah like they are really flying off the shelves theese days.

hmm, that "certain time" is 70 years after the death of the last "author" (author meaning the person who has the rights over the game). SNES may be old, but certainly not THAT old. 8)

1. Doubtful. These mods most likely reference textures and sounds that are only available in the full version.
2. Nope. Same deal as above.

i know. it's the copyright law, based on theatre plays, music, books, etc. but it's the same for computer games.

and it's worldwide. (well, maybe not in china.)

for the US topic. Every country has her bright and dark side. How did George Lukas said it in Episode 3? It always depends on point of view. since this is not the topic to dicuss here I would like to leave it by that.

About the copyrights. Yea there is a time which has to pass bevore it becomes Public domain, but I always thought that goes to music not to Software. Wow. learned something :D

For good free games.
I would definitly look at freeciv for stragist.
Contiuum is a good arcade play like lbreakout.
For the trading fan of Elite or X fans I would like to recommend Vegastrike. There is a Vegastrike based mod featuring the old Wing Commander Mercgame Privateer. This is a good try too.
Planeshift will be great when it starts working again ^^.

For the future I would hold a eye on. UFO-ai (techdemo is in Portage and this one is pure fun) and on Epiar which gains on development again :)

Remember: the old music is allways public domain, because there weren't any things like copyright in those times, not because of a certain time period has expired.

Now what is old musik? When does it end. Wich song is the first ever protected by copyright? d is this song still protected?

I can't answer these Questions but I believe the old songs of Elvis are meanwhile Public domain. (I think I heared something like that. But on the other hand you hear a lot when the day is long ...)

Now to the software. The copyright protects the code as is. Yes?
I mean if you rewrite the game without useíng the original art and the original code you make a "new game". So that shopuld not be a problem. The Problem occurs when you violate Software patents (currently just in the US maybe we get it here in Europ too :( ) Because Patents not protecting what you have done it protects your Ideas.

Last point abandom ware.
This is software a company does not care about. They make no use of their reights on a game since it is not worth the work. The game is to old and not attractive enough to get some share out of it anymore. You could consider them as free to.
I admit this is a very grey right but I would say the market has its own rules how long a Copyright has effect.
(MS wont care for any MS 3.3 copies moving around or do they ^^)

Ohno, I don't mean Elvis, of course there was copyright then, he was really commercial. I was rather looking at the classical music composers...

Is anybody playing glest seriously here? It's a bit immature but quite cool I think, although it should be more like AoM instead of Warcraft 3 (yuck!)

Nexuiz just came out, which is a HEAVILY modified Quake1 engine based FPS that has been in development for years. Totally free, and includes a nice engine, music and a bunch of levels. A strictly multiplayer deathmatch game right now.

I d/l'ed last night and it honestly my jaw dropped. First off, turn off all the realtime lighting, it brought my computer down to 20 fps (AMD64 3000+, nVidia 5900SE 128MB, 1GB Corsair). Even without it, it is beautiful, and it plays well. IMHO, the highest quality free game ever released. Maybe not the *best*, but the quality is outstanding.

For other linux gaming news, I always visit linux-gamers.net. Check it out. =)
