I know that you'll probably tell me to go and read the documentation (which I have),but I can't find the answer to my question, which is:
Can I rely on simply using emerge --sync and emerge -u world to keep my system secure, or do I need to glsa-check too?
I have trawled the security documentation and handbooks, but the only advice I can find is to emerge regularly. If that's the case, what is glsa-check for, and how do you use it?

emerge sync and emerg -uD world will keep your system uptodate with regard to packages, but that does not equate secure. You can never prove security, only insecurity. But you can improve the security of your system. This can help you get started http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-security.xml. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Thanks nielchiano and nixnut for your help. Looks like all I need to do is us the -D option and forget about glsa-check.
