since I am installing gentoo on a small machine to be a router.
and since I won't work on that machine, I want to remove all files, that i can, to gain space.

You can delete all the files in /var/tmp/portage safely. You could also delete all the files in /usr/portage/distfiles, but they would have to be downloaded if you were to re-compile or need them for some reason. Portage would simply get them again, but it would save some space to manage them manually. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Don't delete the files inside /usr/portage, just those in /usr/portage/distfiles. /usr/portage contains the portage tree and a bunch of information on your protage profile. If you delete this then you'll run into many errors when trying to use portage. I think they could be solved by an emerge sync, but I honestly don't know. I've never considered deleting my portage tree to save space and I'm not on my gentoo box to have a look-see and speculate on what would happen. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Even if you deleted everything under /usr/portage, you'd still need the diskspace available to do a sync. If you use the -b or buildpkg option, you can also delete (or backup) files in /usr/portage/packages/All _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
