If you can not ping something you know to be open, like yahoo, then there is a problem with the actual network configuration. I'd go back to the manual and make sure you set up your network properly. If you configured it for a static IP, you are checking that you uncommented the appropriate lines in /etc/conf.d/net and set an IP address, net mask and broadcast address, as well as a default gateway. If you want to run DHCP, make sure that the settings for that are correct.
If you try that and still can't find the problem, we can go from there. You could try: That will ping your own network card.
