|
|
Okay guys (and gals), here's the story.
A few days ago I was on my windows parition and I went to open a video file and bam, it just crapped out.
I was worried something wrong happened. I was right. I didn't get to look at it again until now.
So now when I get to Grub I can choose between Gentoo and Windows.
If I choose Windows I get this:
Code: | Booting 'Windows XP'
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart |
If I choose Gentoo I get this:
Code: | ...
hda: dma_intr: status 0x51 { Drive Ready SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr:error=0x40 { UnCorrectable Error }, LBA sect = 34958213, sector=34958208
end request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 34958208
...(more of the same looking stuff, different sectors (the numbers))...
UDF-fs: No parition found (1)
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,4) |
So... I roll around the Live CD and try to mount the windows parition so I can atleast back up some of the stuff.
I mount the drive and I try to ls and I get what I got when trying to boot Gentoo (plus a few NTFS errors and minus the two last lines of the gentoo bootup). But something wierd happens. At the end of the ls I see a few of my files actually list up (gives me hope that I can recover it). But I can cd into some folders (Not Documents and Settings though...) but again, when I ls into them I get all the errors again. But I can see some files again. I'm not sure if I can do anything with it though. Ahh!
I've tried googling this and I think my harddrive is either dying or is dead. Bad sectors or something. Can someone please clarify to me what is going on with my hard drive? Also, I HAVE to back up some stuff out of my windows parition. I paid good money for those iTunes' songs!! Please someone help me out of this jam.
Also, I own a IBM Thinkpad R50 Laptop. How would I go about telling an IBM Customer support agent that I think my drive is dead and I need a new one. Maybe he'll try to make me do something, but I can't. Someone help me out here because if I need a new drive, I need it asap.
Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it. |

Well... you could try to stick it in a system that has a very good IDE controller (like an Intel PIIX4) and boot up with a tool like Winternals ERD commander to try to get raw sectors and/or whole files off the disk and onto something else.
Still, there are no guarantees. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Erm... yes, of course
I've never seen a hard failure because of an IDE cable myself, but that doesn't mean it can't happen... _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

That changes things - chances are the drive is starting to die because of overheating.
More common than any other cause in laptops. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Well, I guess I won't be able to back up my stuff....:/
Anyways, IBM is sending me a new hard drive -- no questions asked. I love them (They are the best in my opinion) |
