After a bit of fiddling, I've been able to get my Matsushita DVD-RAM drive to play DVDs, region free, using libdvdcss etc. as user root
However I can't get them to play as a normal user. Looking at the output from xine, as a normal user, I see:
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.3.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access
libdvdread: Attempting to use device /dev/md1 mounted on / for CSS authentication
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/md1 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/md1 for reading
libdvdread: Device /dev/md1 inaccessible, CSS authentication not available.
...
Whereas, as root:
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.3.
(c) 2000-2004 The xine Team.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access
libdvdread: Attempting to use device /dev/md1 mounted on / for CSS authentication
libdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed
libdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.8 for DVD access
libdvdread: Attempting to retrieve all CSS keys
libdvdread: This can take a _long_ time, please be patient
... and success.
Clearly there's a permissions problem, but I can't see where it is. Devices (/dev/hda is DVD):
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 May 5 00:51 /dev/dvd -> hda
brw-rw-rw- 1 rich cdrom 3, 0 May 5 00:51 /dev/hda
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 May 5 00:51 /dev/md1 -> md/1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 1 May 5 00:51 /dev/md/1
I'm running udev on a 2.6 kernel with the following output from emerge -pv xine-lib:
ebuild R ] media-libs/xine-lib-1.0-r2 +X -aac -aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts -cle266 -debug -directfb +dvd -dxr3 +esd -fbcon -ffmpeg +flac +gnome -i8x0 +ipv6 -libcaca -mng +nls -nvidia +opengl +oss +png -samba +sdl -speex -theora -v4l -vidix +vorbis -win32codecs -xinerama +xv -xvmc
and hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Model=MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-845S, FwRev=D100, SerialNo=

Thanks in advance for any help!! |

Which groups are your user on ??
It just might be a simple matter of adding it to group cdrw. If he's not there, just do a
gpasswd -a user cdrw |

Thanks for the tip.
I've tried now a different DVD (region 2 not region 1 as above) and it absolutely doesn't work.
If I try ogle as root I get (sorry, long):

Xscreensaver not running.
FATAL[ogle_mpeg_ps]: Segmentation fault
ctrl: ipc_rmid: Invalid argument
And as the normal user, I get exactly the same.
Anyone any idea? Please?!!
By the way, if I do hdparm /dev/hda (the DVD drive) I get:
/dev/hda:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument
What's up with the invalid argument thing?
Cheers in advance
