Hi,

I've added myself in as a "normal" ie non-root user.

When I try to su root it fails - see below. I know that the password is correct because I can login as root.

TIA

root@athena /bin # ls -al su
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 25380 Apr 13 08:50 su

me@athena ~ $ su root
Password:
su: Permission denied
Sorry.
me@athena ~ $

Have you verified everything in the FAQ Forum's "su" thread?

Not just, "yeah, that's good, that''s good,..." I mean actually double checked.

dont specify 'root' just do:
Code:
su

and enter, then when it asks for your password, type in the root password. su changes you to root by default if you dont specify a user to switch to. If this still doesnt work, during the install did you echo tt0 to securetty?...or whatever that line is

it doesn't matter if you type 'su' or 'su root' ..
My guess is, that your user isn't in the group called wheel (check with 'id' and change if necessary...)

I did search for "su root" and found nothing.

The answer was to add the username to /etc/groups for "wheel"

Thanks for your help.
