After updating parts of Gnome (not complete yet) my app list was cleared. Is this normal?

Yes, I updated

gnome-system-tools
gnome-themes
gtk-engines
system-tools-backends

I had to unmerge first on gnome-system-tools and gnome-themes because they were blocking packages.

I went like this to get them to stop blocking packages

Code:

emerge -C gnome-system-tools && emerge system-tools-backends gnome-system-tools
emerge -C gnome-themes && emerge gtk-engines gnome-themes

perhaps this is a common issue. try renaming your gnome config dirs (.gnome, .gnome2, .gnome_private, .gnome2_private) and running gnome. everything should work, even though your preferences will be lost. also, what do you have when you navigate to "applications:///" in nautilus?

"applications:///" is not a valid location.
Please check the spelling and try again.

I'm going to completely update gnome first and if it doesn't fix it, then I'll try anything else.

Not if you're part way through updating the gnome-2.10. Gnome-2.10 uses a different menus system entirely, so if you're only half way there then that'll explain it. There's no "applications:///" in gnome-2.10.

Cheers,
James

Yeah this I realized after updating more parts of it. There are 3 menus now and they are sorted differently.
