Hi
First post here, just thought I'd say hi!
I've been using linux for a cuple of year now, mostly Suse with some Slackware and Fedora along the way. I've heard so much about Gentoo I thought I'd give it a try.
What a learning curve. Probably learnt more in the last couple of days than all the time before.....
Still, I'm up and running, posting this, listening to music and waiting for gnucash to finish compiling so I'm getting there.
First impressions....wow, then, WOW.....I've got CONTROL....
Feel a little in awe somehow and wonder if I need a bigger brain, it certainly hurt a little when installing but the guide is first class if you take the time to read it..
Anyway I'm sure I'll pop back to seek a litlle help and who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to help someone!
Hey take care out there |

Welcome to Gentoo. I'm glad you've taken the time to properly try it. Most people who really make an effort to install Gentoo dont turn back. It's only those who are too lazy to learn how to install it. _________________ Thanks,

Welcome !
I used to use SuSE too. I had to compile 'vital' apps like mplayer by hand and 'make install' them. I once even updated the KDE with rpms from the SuSE ftp. A few hours after the update I was reinstalling from the CDs
Gentoo installation feels like Alice-rolling-down-the-rabit-hole, but I have not looked back since. |

Debian and Arch Linux are waiting for you to use 'em, when you grow tired of compiling... _________________ Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. |

So... what are you compiling ?
Please don't tell me you are one of these misguided "I run emerge -uD world every night" people... _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I haven't understood the problem with compiling either. Yeah, it blows for the first 2 weeks trying to get everything setup, but I rarely even compile things after that. I run emerge world -u once or twice a month and never have any problems. |

Compiling? well it was kde. took 24 hours...phew.
Never having used emerge before its like a new toy at the mo. Like IvanYosifov said, with suse it would take ages, leave a host of dependancy errors and much gnashing of teeth. This is so different, and it works!!
Yeah I hope i don't get caught staring at the screen as the white lines go up all night, I'm sure the novelty will wear off.
I can't say how impressed I am at the mo, things just work. I'm sure I'll get a few that don't but for now.... _________________ Its not the critic who counts, nor he who tells how the strong man stumbles |
