Hi all,
On my little gentoo firewall box I originally manually installed, ie not emerged, gShield, configured it and off it went, merrily firewalling. I did a search through portage recently and there was an emerge for gShield. I thought that I would "kill off" my old manual install and do a flashy new emerge install. I did an "emerge --pretend net-misc/gshield" and it told me that it wanted to also emerge net-dns/bind-tools. My question is WHY???

I originally did not have bind or any part of bind installed when I did my manual install and gShield worked fine. Why does it now want it?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated,
Andrew

mostly likely it wants to use dig or nslookup which are part of bind-tools. bind-tools does not contain the named server.
