Im on XFree86 4.3.8 or something, and I really want Xorg.
Because you guys in portage merged XFree and XOrg,
I would just really need to update Xorg-x11 :). The only problem
is when I attempt so, Mozilla FireFox and Thunderbird are blocking the
mandatory freetype package. What can I do??

You won't loose anything from /home or /var (which is where emails and other settings are stored)

Ok, but how do I restore these settings after emerging it again? Or do I have to?
Keep in mind I need to be root to emerge something, and the usual email is all in
my regular user. Will that make any difference?

You will not notice any difference, all your old settings and data will be kept. Portage only deals with the system-wide executables, not the user settings.
