I just installed k3b and tried burning a few files onto a data DVD but I get the following error:

Quote:
System
-----------------------
K3b Version:0.11.18
KDE Version: 3.3.2
QT Version: 3.3.4

growisofs
-----------------------
/dev/hdc: "Current Write Speed" is 8.2x1385KBps.
:-( unable to WRITE@LBA=0h: Input/output error
:-( write failed: Input/output error

growisofs comand:
-----------------------
/usr/bin/growisofs -Z /dev/hdc -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=tty -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -speed=8 -gui -graft-points -volid Akira -volset -appid K3B THE CD KREATOR VERSION 0.11.18 (C) 2003 SEBASTIAN TRUEG AND THE K3B TEAM -publisher -preparer K3b - Version 0.11.18 -sysid LINUX -volset-size 1 -volset-seqno 1 -sort /tmp/kde-root/k3bZuxY9a.tmp -rational-rock -hide-list /tmp/kde-root/k3b8qpmFa.tmp -full-iso9660-filenames -iso-level 2 -path-list /tmp/kde-root/k3bBl1jgc.tmp

I'm using gnome, by the way.

Did you check if any other CD/DVD burner application has the same error? Try xcdroast, or something completely different than k3b, and see if you can make that burn your media ;-)

I've tried graveman and it told me that the burn process failed. I can't remember what the details were for the error, but it must be related to the one I received from k3b.

How do you plan to figure out what the problem is if you don't even read the error message? :-D

Please post what the error message is to at least have an idea to where to look :-)

Also as I see you're trying to burn DVDs here, did you try if the same happens for a regular CD-R?

Maybe it's a permissions problem? Run k3bsetup to fix.

I just ran graveman and tried burning a data DVD... the error message just said Operation Failed. The following is the output from the k3b log:

That was the output from k3b's log file. Now here's the output from my console after I tried k3b then graveman:

Quote:

Again, the only error I get from graveman is "Operation Failed". It doesn't tell me anything else and I don't know where it keeps its log file.

Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know what the error "unable to WRITE@LBA=0h: Input/output error" might mean?

Do you have W*****s on there? Can you burn stuff with it, if not it may be a hardware problem of some sort.

I can't seem to burn with any program I use! Must be hardware problem then, like you suggested. Anyone know how I could resolve this problem?

If it doesnt burn under windows, gentoo, $anyotheros, any livecd etc, then its probably hardware -

Is the drive and/or computer under warranty still? Can you afford a new one (a drive, that is, you dont need a new computer)?

Theres not a lot you can do if its died - take it apart & have a play maybe? ;)

Have you checked all the cables are plugged in? Tried a different IDE cable, different position (master/slave), different IDE port? I dont know how much of that will help, but it may help somehow.....

Failing that, and you end up buying a new one, take the old one apart & see if you can make it work.. - maybe theres some dust under the lens or something

Well before I migrated over to Gentoo from Windows XP I made sure that I burned all of my data onto DVD's. This worked perfectly fine under Windows XP but it just doesn't work under Linux for some reason.

Its definately something to do with my hardware configuration because I can't burn under any program (k3b, graveman, xcdroast, etc.)

This might seem obvious, but can you read from it? If you can read a data disk try putting in a music disk and see if a music player can. I ran into all kinds of wackyness with cd's before because of PAM. Root and users were members of the cd group but still couldn't see it.

graveman is still very experimental , not much use for testing. Very little ouput.

xcdroast is you best bet, it goes straight to the low level devices not via /dev/cd-blah symlinks etc.

I have been unable to burn with ide-scsi since 2.6.9-nitro1 (tho' reading is fine) so if you use that try ide-cd.

You must have all this ide stuff built-in , dont build as modules.

Also get the latest k3b : 0.11.24 or at least 0.11.23-r2 , there is a lot of improvements and bug fixes going on recently here especially to keep up with kernel changes that are breaking stuff.

I'm almost positive this problem will be solved by installing a new kernel. I'm going to install the 2.6.11.9 kernel as soon as I get some free time and will make sure that I compile all of that IDE and SCSI stuff right into the kernel. I'm hoping that this will work because I've tried X-CD-Roast and k3b numerous times and they both fail right as I start burning something. The DVD's are not written to, fortunately.

That brings me to my next question... which kernel version should I be using? The latest one found at www.kernel.org or the one I get through emerge gentoo-sources?

I would recommend cko or nitro 2.6.11-r2

cko is solid and I have no burning issues with ide-cd on that. nitro-sources are good in general but very experimental so I recommend the last one I have used and know to work.

nitro is based on ck or cko anyway but with other tweeks , cko is a good sound base , nice and responcive under load.

I do get write failures with both of these with ide-scsi, although not the same one you are seeing.

The last kerenl I had that worked correctly with ide-scsi was nitro-2.6.9-nitro1 , also a very good kernel.

FINALLY IT WORKS! :D

I just installed a new kernel (linux-2.6.11-ck7-r1 which was an emerge of ck-sources) and my burner is finally working.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I really appreciate it. :) The less I have to use my Windows XP partition, the better!

Good job you did not thow it away or that it to bits then

What? You still have one of those ? Just as a means of testing odd bits of hardware, right?

:P

Now try downloading an ISO while ripping a CD and compiling kde-libs and tell me whether you like ck-sources?
