I think i'll stick with the older drivers for now. :)
You should report this problem on nVNews NVIDIA Linux forum, because 7xxx drivers will stop working with 2.6.15 kernels.

Why will they stop working?

I've used the last stable version (66.xx) with kernel 2.6.13.3 w/o any major problems.

I think a lot of deprecated system functions will be removed for 2.6.15, thus breaking the older nvidia driver.

    xorg 6.8.2
    nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4

my system crashed at least 2 times an hour.
now im using the 7676-r1 driver and everything is ok
i just wanted to mention that for those, who are searching for a solution.

I'm running gentoo-sources 2.6.14-r5, X.org 6.8.2 (right now using the basic OSS nv driver).

Tried nvidia-(kernel|glx) 6629, 7676, and 8179. They all freeze X very shortly after logging in.

Not sure if this is on topic but my two cent's worth....

Brought all new part's for a HTPC (Gentoo-Mythtv, Celeron2.8) much faster than my main box (AthlonXP2k) and now that I've got Xorg and Myth on there I've struck lock up problems... I'll describe them...

Machine just stiing there or emerging all OK, record program to disk all OK, wathch live TV or watch recorded program, after a while, X goes 100% cpu and log's have xid and nvidia wait errors in them, kill -9 xorg sometimes does not work KB does not work can ssh into machine and fluff around till the cow's come home. Reboot machine to clear X and start all over again. I've done everything suggested from mythtv, knoppmyth, gentoo and nvidia forums nothing helps.

I brought all new gear as I hoped I would have less problems and have a waranty etc, brought NVIDIA 6200 based card because I thought there were less problems with them.... bummer. my main box has a NVIDIA mx440 and I have none of these problems...

I hope Grooby is wrong with older drivers not going to work with newer kernels as the new NVIDIA driver does not work with some older cards and it being propriatory we'll probably find my MX440 will become unsupported too... although isn't this what we all left behind when we started using LINUX???

Regards
Tim

--- Was going to try the NV driver but my nVidia 6200 is too new and not recognosed, using the vesa driver is a pain but at least I don't get lockups... :D

Same problems Here:

DELL OPtiPlex GX270
P4 HT
Video Intel i865G

Effects:
Sometimes screen is black, or I get some visual artefacts and no mouse, or reboot, or X restart. Several times a day, at random

Tried with:
Xorg 6.8.2r6, 6.8.2r4, 7.0
AGP aperture to 32Mo, NO ACPI in kernel, no fbdev support in kernel....

Nota:
Sometimes I get Kernel panic at boot too.

I've disabled XAA acceleration, and, so far so good.

I think that this thread is dying... but the problem is definitely NOT solved. This is because many people speak about many different things. And this problem is big enough to have some attention of devs...

I do not mean any offence, but wouldn't it be worth to summarize this thread, find the solutions which worked on different systems and to put them into one place? I think that this would help a lot...

I would do it myself, and I tried to do so, but it seems I am too dumb to recognise a post which has some point from a completely non-sense one....

Go on people, give me hell now for this

What seems to work:
- NVAGP set to 2 or 0 (disabled) in xorg.conf (for Nvidia's cards)
- renderaccel off in xorg.conf
- use of OSS drivers
- gentoo-sources-2.6.12, the 7174 nvidia drivers and xorg 6.8.2-r1
- Option "HWCursor" "off" in xorg.conf
- latest kernel + latest Nvidia/ATI driver
- boot parameters: pci=routeirq

Possible causes:
- error inside X -> supposedly fixed in xorg 7.0
- Nordbridge or graphic card overheating

There's no general solution to the problem.

My reboot problem was caused by bad hardware.
My Sysadmin installed Windows XP and it crashed the same.

Maybe other people should check hardware failure too.

I have checked my hardware some time ago when the problem appeared, but to no avail.... Why would some hardware failure appear in Linux, but not in Windows?

So far I tried two distros on my current machine, Gentoo and Ubuntu (Kubuntu, to be exact), both crashed after a few minutes of work.

Now my Gentoo install is messed up by hard-restarts and some testing... I will try a clean install, and try everything written above. Let's see what happens.... :?

The problem is supposedly related to Gentoo due to some heavy compiling optimizations. There was some talking about that in this thread.

Then Slackware also fails under the same problem, I found out earlier. Tried that distro, same problems of the nVidia driver not working (but once again, nv does, what a surprise ~_~)

I wonder if there's anybody who knows how to write drivers, figure out nVidia stuff, and is willing to make a completely free open source one (LGPL or similar... perhaps a 2-clause BSD if they like to be liberal). It might be a solution to several people having problems with the binary-only official driver, but seeing how most people seem to have success, I can't image too many people wanting to do this.

I might want to note that I have been having the problems mentioned about xorg freeze ups.
(also, I've heard of ati folk having the same problems)

I believe I have also "cured' myself.
See, a few days ago, my computer-box was exibiting some tell-tale symptoms of bad ram.
(like, a perfectly good live cd unable to generate a ram disk)
I might want to note, that the live cd has worked fine with the same ram within the last 3 months, which is about the time frame I've been vexed by the freeze ups. Anyhow, when the live cd stoped working, my main install couldn't load up X without crashing. Somtimes, if I was lucky, I would get a few windowmaker icons, and a cursor ;)

To conclude my epic tale, new ram came in the mail today, and X works like a charm. Havn't tested the live cd (I should, though), but something tells me I don't need to.
Any rate, I'll report back if it crashes again.
I hope this isn't a matter of hardware problems for everyone else, but I hope this helps.

i don't think, it's a hardware problem, because X works fine with the nv driver.

I've found that the 7676-r1 drivers work with 2.6.14 & .15 kernels (gentoo-sources & vanilla.) The 8xxx series drivers cause my X to coredump (reliably, at least :D ) and I have to reboot the system blind (screen is black but system still functions otherwise.) It seems there are some large changes to PCI & memory handling in the 2.6.15 kernel series (it's what's finally allowed my Audigy Notebook card to function). There was a patch on the nvNews forums that apparently fixes the hardlocks people are experiencing but it hasn't been rolled into a release AFAIK. If you've tried updating to the 8xxx series and roll back to 7xxx you will have to hunt down and manually kill off the 8xxx files left over after an emerge -C. nVidia has also dropped some cards from the monolithic driver -- be sure yours isn't on the list. I've always had PC's with nvidia when running linux and found that disabling everything - AGP, SBA & FW can usually get you running. Given that graphics cards are shipping with up to 512MB of discrete RAM you likely don't need 'em. HTH & YMMV

- Todd.

I don't know if I have the same problem or not.

System: Asus A7N8X Deluxe with a Hercules ATI 9700 Pro AGP card. 1G RAM. Sata Drives.

Symtoms: Complete lockup after a random amount of time. X freezes, mouse won't move, cannot break out using [ctrl]+[fn] to a console or shut down the X server. Have to reset the PC using the BRB.

At first I thought it was sometime to do with automount. I had the system configured to automount my ipod so I cound transfer music. Disabled that and it's still doing it. Last lock up was when nothing was going on. I was in the middle of reading a comment here, went to move the mouse and it would not move.

I've now rebooted and have not started Grip or any other GTK app to see if that is part of the issue.

Should know soon. This is the 7th or 8th boot this afternoon.

Derek
