I've found a way to reproduce this problem. At first, the only thing that seemed to correlate was uptime--I could usually go about 6 days, but my max uptime ever was 13 days. That was all I had to go on for a while, but now I've found out that if I mess around with the cables connected to my PCI cards -- monitor plug, maybe headphones too -- and in conjunction with a 6+ day uptime, then it will crash. Specifically, the mouse will move in X, but nothing else will respond and it will stop drawing anything else to X besides the mouse.

I had lockups after 5 minutes of uptime, so this was probably not the point for me :)

I tried the modular xorg and I couldn't get it to work right. I performed some massive |<|_||\|6 p|-|00 on it but it was just no go. I think I will try it again when I start hearing people bragging about how it actually works... :-P

If everybody had the same attitude, then we will be here for a looooong time :)

Believe me, I would be a LOT more involved if I could afford the down-time due to breakages, but I've got school projects that have to be coded and I do not have the kung ph00 to throw some voodoo... on this

I understand.... I had the same problem, and tried to solve it, because I needed the system to be able to run flawlessly for a longer time... Now my problem is solved, though I do not know how I did it, and I really cannot undertake the risk of renewing this problem by messing up with the system.

Edit: the point is, that I understand your attitude :)

Does anyone know whether these lockups still happen on Xorg 6.9/7.0?

I've had random hard-locks on both machines I installed Gentoo on last month. They are different but similar. Here are the specifics:

Machine 1: 2P Opteron, 2GB Ram, NVIDIA GF4Ti4600, installed from AMD64 2005.1-rc1 livecd, universal, GRP
Machine 2: dual core A64 4800+, 2GB Ram, NVIDIA 7800GT, installed from AMD64 2005.1-rc1 livecd, but got live packages for everything from a Jan 3rd snapshot.

The locks are random, but I can reliably reproduce them by running rdesktop. Machine 1 has uptimes of up to a week when I don't run rdesktop. Machine 2 is rebooted daily (home machine).

The locks are hard: I can't ssh into the box, keyboard lights don't change, screen is frozen.

I tried switching to nv on Machine 1.

On 2, I'm running:
Code:

x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6
media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r5
sys-kernel/genkernel-3.3.10

Code:
sugreeva ~ # cat /proc/cmdline
root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda4 udev vga=794 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2005.1 CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 quiet

1 is similarly configured.

A colleague suggested that SMP may be the culprit and that I should try passing maxcpus=1 to the kernel. I haven't done this yet...

Anyone have any other ideas for experiments?

I used to have frequent lockups but my current uptime is 59 days. As I have said before, I think in my case the problem was the northbridge overheating. Making the northbridge cooler have sufficient thermal paste really seems to have solved the problem for me.

You don't know what your thermal paste situation is unless you check! I have found out that motherboards may have wildly lacking amounts of thermal paste hidden under the northbridge fan.

One more point of interest. I'm reasonably sure Machine 1 has good hardware because it was running AMD64 Gentoo 2003 based build for 2 years with no problems. I just did the wipe and reinstall to avoid figuring out how to get mutlilib working. That's when the lockups started.

Machine 2 is brand new but behaves just like machine 1, and since they have the same software setup, I think that's where the problem is.

hmm, in lockup I managed to kill the display with Alt+SysRq+E, didn't get the usual effect of a tty1 login but when I pressed it again it printed SysRq Term Signal so I assume X was killed in some way and I was in tty1, however
Quote:

Quote:

* Sometimes SysRQ seems to get 'stuck' after using it, what can I do?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That happens to me, also. I've found that tapping shift, alt, and control
on both sides of the keyboard, and hitting an invalid sysrq sequence again
will fix the problem. (ie, something like alt-sysrq-z). Switching to another
virtual console (ALT+Fn) and then back again should also help.
Doing Alt+SysRq+I simply froze the screen completely.
I will try Alt+SysRq+K next time it freezes although I don't think it will work.
Hello,
I have this bug also, but I have found a mode to reproduce it:
With KDE i have Started the Skyrocket (GL) screensaver and in a little time I have a hard Freezing.
I have this bug after un upgrade from an old Mainboard with a socket 478 to a Mainboard with a Socket 578. I have a NVIDIA PCX750 (A PCI Express)
I'll try to migrate to a Modular X and posts the results.
Now I have a
x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6 -3dfx -3dnow +bitmap-fonts +cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx +doc -font-server -insecure-drivers -ipv6 -minimal +mmx +nls -nocxx +opengl +pam -sdk +sse -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) -xprint +xv 45,134 kB
and the:
media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8178 -dlloader 0 kB
media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3
PS
¿Has somebody a hard freezing with socket 478?
welp..after fighting it for the last 2 months, I finally decided to run memtest86 and was shocked to see all these errors. Gonna try to RMA the chips and see if that could be the cause of my problem.
Hello,
I can lock up my Xorg 7.0 server at will just by changing resolutions more than once. I posted to the Radeon thread my config and problems. Then I saw this thread.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-435072.html
Machine config:
Gentoo - fairly up to date...
Xorg 7.0
KDE 3.5
Kernel 2.6.16-rc3-nitro1 using genkernel
Soyo Dragon KT333 system board - the Silver one..
Athalon 2000+ Stepping 02
ATI AIW8500DV
Adaptech 2940 Ultra SCSI adpater (aic7880)
Bill
My ideas to test:
NVIDIA-GLX don't have the dlloader use flag enabled
Use DRI, can give troubles, because I use the NVIDIA drivers
Not long ago I have the use 3dfx enabled and I don't have this freezings
VIDEO card is buggy, I'll test it with windows XP.
Solved this problem:
glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
after deleting from xorg.conf these lines:
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"
But now I have a fast lookup with the screensaver.
Very interesting
Houston we have a problem :( :( :( :(
you should add the following line to the device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Code:
Option       "AllowGLXWithComposite" "1"
then you'll be able to keep your
Code:
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"
lines
yes, I have lockups, but now they appear after more time.
I have played to prboom and I don't have lockups with it.
Tomorrow I'll try the gentoo-sources-2.16-15-r5
Did these lines really start with # ? In that case, deleting them would give you no difference
Well guys, I hate to say it, but this is a critical bug for me. I'll be in Windows until it gets fixed. I can't just have my computer randomly freeze multiple times a day. I tried tinkering with the render, composite, and allowglxwithcomposite options. None changed the problem. This just started happening to me after I got a new video card and did a bunch of updates. So I'm not sure which caused the problem. I upgraded to an GeForce FX from a Geforce Ti4400.
I have tried this:
emerge nvidia-settings
After this
run
nvidia-settings as a regular user
open gl settings
performance
select
sync to v blank
And NO FREEZING with the opengl screensaver.
¿Can somebody confirm this ?
For the random freezing I don't know if this can work.
Only a problem:
The NVIDIA X driver does not preserve values set with nvidia-settings between runs of the X server (or even between logging in and logging out of X, with xdm, gdm, or kdm)
I have to load nvidia-settings each time.
