Hello my question is not very complicated.

First I'm sorry for my poor english.

I have a server with 2sata hdd in raid 1.

My question is :

How can i know if a hdd is dead? There is some software that can verify this an send us a mail or ohter things like that?

if it is a software raid, you can use mdadm as a monitoring daemon, and "cat /proc/mdstat" shows the status from a console

linux + hardware raids = tedious, boring, and just plain not worth it unless you are some huge datastore company with a gigantic raid 5

Try an md software raid next time.

it's not a problem because the server is not installed yet.

But i don't know anithing about software raid.

Can you tell the name of the soft to use plz?

mdadm for monitoring
??? for installing

...???


edit : here I have 2 hdd in my server and i think the best is raid1 for secutity. Are you agree with that?

Probably. But it would help to know what the server is going to be used for, how critical the data is, what the expected load is, etc...

A sorry I have forgotten this important thing.

The server will be a webserver and wa wan't to reduce the risk to have a downtime.

It's for this reason that we wan't to use raid.

A raid 1 will be ideal for eliminating down time do to a single disk failure, but be mindful that it is no substitute for regular backups.
