Hi,

simple problem: there's a new printer (Samsung CLP-550N) connected to our LAN and nobody knows what IP it has got.
Of course there's some windows-software delivered with it, but I think I just need the IP of the printer to print, but how can I detect it?

Thankx for any idea,

Tom

Try scanning the subnet with nmap -O for OS detection, so you get hints on what kind of machine there is at a certain IP.

eg. this for the local network:
Code:

nmap -O 192.168.0.*

Assuming it received its IP via DCHP you might try looking at the leases table. Generally your desktops if they are by the same manufacturer are all going to have the similar MAC addresses. They'll likely all start with 0000.56xx.xxxx, 000c.41xxx.xxx, and so forth based on the manufacturer of the NIC card. Your printer may have a drastically different MAC which might standout with a quick eyeball.

The nmap suggestion is probably the most foolproof solution.

thank you all, it works now!
btw: the printer can detect itself which ip it has and prints this out automaticly.

Ah yeah,of course, thats the best solution, sorry for forgetting about this... :)
On HP printers just press the two upper buttons for 2 secs, if I remember correctly, and then they print out their IP along with other info.
