Hi all,

I'm trying for over three hours to get my mail- server & clients working. Everything despite fetching mails from a client computer is working fine! I'm using postfix and courier-imap.
All the necessary processes are started (postfix courier-imapd-ssl). Also the clients are configured perfectly.

Any ideas??

What kind of authentication are you using? If you have logging set up, can you check and maybe post some more detailed error info?

OT - Actually, syslog-ng is wonderful once you learn how to use this. I'm not saying this to pick, just that if you learn it properly you can do amazing things with it. For example, using the $program variable in the syslog-ng conf file. I have a directory /var/log/mail in which syslog-ng splits all my log files by $program. So I have a pop3.log, smtp.log, lmtp.log, imap.log, etc... It make tracking down problems a breeze.

Anyways, back to the topic. Most of that log is postfix smtpd, which is for processing mail. I think you said origionally the problem was retrieving it. The only things I can see applicable are:
Quote:

May 10 23:27:10 genius-2 pop3d-ssl: Unexpected SSL connection shutdown.
......
May 10 23:28:10 genius-2 imapd-ssl: Unexpected SSL connection shutdown.

I really can't tell from just these messages, but since they are the only messages, I'd guess it's an error in establishing the secure connection. Which could be many things... certificates, server settings, client settings. Is there any way to turn up the logging level in the imapd config file? If you are using mysql you can always turn on the more detailed logging there as well.

Thanks for the advice (syslog-ng is like all other tools little child, that needs to be educated!)

However i read the "Gentoo Sec. Guide" and rewrote a new syslog-ng.conf. Here are the results when i try fetching mails from a client:

mail.log:
Quote:

May 11 22:18:49 genius-2 imapd: LOGIN FAILED, user=root, ip=[::ffff:192.168.5.1]
May 11 22:18:49 genius-2 imapd: authentication error: Input/output error

Looks like it's not getting to far in authenticating. What mechinism are you using to store the user info? Just /etc/passwd? How do you have your system messages configured under syslog-ng? A nice thing to do to organize them is use the $facility variable in syslog-ng.conf. This way your system messages, instead of being stored in one big 'messages' log, they are broken down into auth.log, auth-priv.log, kernl.log, daemon.log... if you are using the typical authentiation means (/etc/passwd), then there is probably message showing up under the auth facility.

I have highlighted above where I think the main problem is. I have seen this before when it can not access the authentication measures. In my case, it wasn't connecting to the database correctly. In this case, if you are using /etc/passwd, it may be an issue with the authentication setup and PAM. However, this information alone is not enough. It just shows that it likely can't access the means to authenticate. So now what you have to do is debug that mechanism. If it is system accounts, then check error messages for PAM under the system auth facility. If it is MySQL, then enable the main log in MySQL and see if it's not connecting.

All these log messages can really do is steer you in the right direction towards the next clue.

i'm here again after some updates and correcting conf-files. but i still can't fetch mails.

here's the log when i try fetching mails:

mail.err:

genius-2 ist the hostname. As you can see the authdaemon tries to login into the mysql server. but he can't due to

Well, it's trying to connect to 'mysql.example.com' as the mysql server, and it can't. So given that you really want it to connect to that server, you need to check networking issues, such as hostname resolution and stuff like that. Make sure mysql is really running on port 3306 on that server. However, if you don't want it to connect to a remote mysql server, ie: you want it to connect to a mysql server running locally on that machine, then set the mysql server to connect to to localhost.

Ok after google'ing a little bit I found this:

http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-server@gentoo.org/msg00449.html

I think the virtual-mailserver-howto is outdated. But I couldn't find an alternative howto. I think the conf-files of courier-imap have moved therefore the I tried to find the new ones. Here are they:

/etc/courier/courier/authlib/*

#
# (EXPERIMENTAL)
# This is optional, MYSQL_SELECT_CLAUSE can be set when you have a database,
# which is structuraly different from proposed. The fixed string will
# be used to do a SELECT operation on database, which should return fields
# in order specified bellow:
#
# username, cryptpw, clearpw, uid, gid, home, maildir, quota, fullname, options
#
# The username field should include the domain (see example below).
#
# Enabling this option causes ignorance of any other field-related
# options, excluding default domain.

# There are two variables, which you can use. Substitution will be made
# for them, so you can put entered username (local part) and domain name
# in the right place of your query. These variables are:
# $(local_part), $(domain), $(service)
#
# If a $(domain) is empty (not given by the remote user) the default domain
# name is used in its place.
#
# $(service) will expand out to the service being authenticated: imap, imaps,
# pop3 or pop3s. Courier mail server only: service will also expand out to
# "courier", when searching for local mail account's location. In this case,
# if the "maildir" field is not empty it will be used in place of
# DEFAULTDELIVERY. Courier mail server will also use esmtp when doing
# authenticated ESMTP.
#
# This example is a little bit modified adaptation of vmail-sql
# database scheme:
#
# MYSQL_SELECT_CLAUSE SELECT CONCAT(popbox.local_part, '@', popbox.domain_name), \
# CONCAT('{MD5}', popbox.password_hash), \
# popbox.clearpw, \
# domain.uid, \

# FROM popbox, domain \
# WHERE popbox.local_part = '$(local_part)' \
# AND popbox.domain_name = '$(domain)' \
# AND popbox.domain_name = domain.domain_name

##NAME: MYSQL_ENUMERATE_CLAUSE:1
#
# {EXPERIMENTAL}
# Optional custom SQL query used to enumerate accounts for authenumerate,
# in order to compile a list of accounts for shared folders. The query
# should return the following fields: name, uid, gid, homedir, maildir, options
#
# Example:
# MYSQL_ENUMERATE_CLAUSE SELECT CONCAT(popbox.local_part, '@', popbox.domain_name), \
# domain.uid, \
# domain.gid, \
# CONCAT(domain.path, '/', popbox.mbox_name), \
# '', \
# CONCAT('sharedgroup=', sharedgroup) \
# FROM popbox, domain \
# WHERE popbox.local_part = '$(local_part)' \
# AND popbox.domain_name = '$(domain)' \
# AND popbox.domain_name = domain.domain_name

##NAME: MYSQL_CHPASS_CLAUSE:0
#
# (EXPERIMENTAL)
# This is optional, MYSQL_CHPASS_CLAUSE can be set when you have a database,
# which is structuraly different from proposed. The fixed string will
# be used to do an UPDATE operation on database. In other words, it is
# used, when changing password.
#
# There are four variables, which you can use. Substitution will be made
# for them, so you can put entered username (local part) and domain name
# in the right place of your query. There variables are:
# $(local_part) , $(domain) , $(newpass) , $(newpass_crypt)
#
# If a $(domain) is empty (not given by the remote user) the default domain
# name is used in its place.
# $(newpass) contains plain password
# $(newpass_crypt) contains its crypted form
#
# MYSQL_CHPASS_CLAUSE UPDATE popbox \
# SET clearpw='$(newpass)', \
# password_hash='$(newpass_crypt)' \
# WHERE local_part='$(local_part)' \
# AND domain_name='$(domain)'

And the log file after changing the hostname etc.
