Hello!

Is there a possibility to use my Voodoo 2-AddOn card under Gentoo? I'd like to be able to play Quake 2 etc.
I haven't found anything in the net except a note that Voodoo 1 and 2 are more difficult to handle and that they are not supported by DRI.
Would be nice to know if it is possible and what modules to select in kernel and/or additional packages that have to be emerged.

Hi,

I do not know wether this helps, there is a Voodoo 3/3000 in my box, which works so far under xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1, with hw acceleration. Getting up glide is always a pain in the a** . prboom runs nearly flawless in 800x600x16, 3d accelerated of course.

According to the X.org driver docs here http://www.x.org/X11R6.8.2/doc/glide.4.html you should be able to get something out of Voodoo 1 & 2 cards now. This has long been near impossible and left to l33+people only.

Voodoo 3 cards can use the tdfx driver and are fully usable. There might be some problem with the glide-v3 ebuild in portage. I seem to recall some glide library file was missing..? The glxgears score compared to similar machines should tell you when everything works like it should.

Next to me i have a K6-2 333 just finishing compiling X.org 6.8.2. The PC has been equipped with a Diamond Monster 3D II (Voodoo 2) I've had lying around for years. It'll be exciting trying it out!

*later*

I've been messing around with X.org for an hour becoming none the wiser. Reading the release notes for X.org 6.8.x it says that there should now be a glide-less driver for the Voodoo 1 & 2 board. But I can't find it! And X.org doesn't autodetect my Voodoo 2 (well, does show up nicely in the log but can't be activated). Also, there is no "glide" driver either! Perhaps i need to re-emerge X.org with 3dfx set?

If you have an old Voodoo 1 or 2 board - start tinkering! (so I won't have to do it)

*still later*

Ok, this https://www.redhat.com/archives/axp-list/2004-April/msg00053.html cleared things up a bit. So no glide. Now just to find the voodoo-driver. I guess I'll go ~x86 next..

*couple of days later* :)

Hi,

I'm in the process of getting my SLI connected Voodoo2 cards to work.

The link http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS.html in the GLIDE(4) xorg man page is broken, so you can't get the drivers from there.

Anyway, as google is quite a pal if you're patient enough, I have found some Slackware tgz's and other distro's RPMs (including sources) with Glide 2 Drivers.

RPMFind
Slackware Extras, 3DFx
3DFx Reference, Voodoo2

I didn't take notes on what I did so far, but this is what I have done, sort of. From one of the Slackware, 3DFx Reference files or both, I placed the following files:
/usr/lib/libglide2x.so (with a /usr/lib/libglide.so.2 softlink)
/usr/lib/libglide.so.2.53
/usr/X11R6/lib/libglide2x.so (with a /usr/X11R6/lib/libglide.so.2 softlink)

I placed a glide device in the xorg.conf file.

I have successfuly ran testGlide2x from one of the packages, as root though, because of the lack of permissions. I haven't yet digged into that.

Now I'm trying to compile the src drivers I've found on RPMFind, with no luck so far.

Background

Just trying to get the voodoo2s up and running for fun. I have a NVidia GeForce 5500FX which serves 3D purpose perfectly, so the voodoo2s are just for geek/vintage effect.

EDIT: Just tried Unreal Tournament (original) with glide (3dfx). Success :), but still as root though. Is there anyway to see if SLI is being used?

EDIT2: I have downloaded GlideControl from RPMFind, compiled it, ran it, but a Voodoo1 with 0MB of RAM is identified :(.

EDIT3: I tried playing UT for a bit, but then, 25 seconds after playing, the video output becomes blured, just like a narcotic effect seen in some games where you have slowmotion. I tried to exit UT but the voodoo image freezes and I can't control anything. I could have disconnected the passthrough cable, but a CTRL-ALT-DEL was more handy. I suppose it was caused by having a glib2.1 compiled driver in a glib2.6.5 system... That's enough for today.

I know this thread is quite a few months old but has anyone succeeded with a voodoo2 yet because I am in the process of setting up my first gentoo machine to play around with and do some very basic gaming with my Orchid Righteous 3D II?

I haven't, yet. For an indefinite amount of time my Voodoo tweaking will be on halt. If I ever do achieve something with the Voodoos in Gentoo, I'll post back.

BTW, if it matters (to complement my previous post), the Voodoos I own are both Creative Labs 12MB (rev02).
