Not sure we understand the question. Are you seeing the term "snapshots" referenced somewhere? If so, can you point us to the documentation so we can see how it's used in context?

just a shot in the blue:
Regarding software releases, snapshot normaly means "in-development-package in the state as of time dd.mm.yyyy hh.mm.ss", so e.g. a cvs snapshot is a tar-ball or package taken at a specific time from the cvs-repository; taken a minute later, a fix or a bug may have been introduced. hmm, not sure if this is clear; anyway, not sure what you really want to know either

can't help you there, under /usr/portage I have distfiles, none of the remaining; maybe I missed an upate...nope, latest port`ge installed...
*shrug*, more input , what is the parent dir?
anyway, it will be what I tried to explain...*g*
