ok, I've been trying to get a samba share up in our schools network so my shares that are available when I'm in windows are also available when I'm in linux. I've manually played with the files and am using KDE 3.4 network configuration utilities. Is there a way to set the shares up so that anyone who can browse the LAN can see my shares without a prompt or password and without me allowing there IP specifically, because there are a lot, and I'm not the network admin. thanks for the help. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |

well why not although I doubt any one see's this seeing as how this post is old. I seem to have the shares up, and yes that example helped, I have 3 of 4 shares showing though, I don't understand why my 4th share doesn't seem to be visible. here's my smb.conf
Code: | [global]
workgroup = KURTZ 223
netbios name = XEN
security = share
[My Music]
path = /mnt/ntfs/My Music
comment = music share
guest ok = yes
read only = yes
[My Videos]
path = /mnt/ntfs/My Videos
comment = video share
guest ok = yes
read only = yes
[Downloads]
path = /mnt/ntfs/Downloads
comment = my downloads
guest ok = yes
read only = yes
[Backup Programs]
path = /mnt/ntfs/Backup Programs
comment = my windows backup programs
guest ok = yes
read only = yes |
I've checked the paths, they are good.
but in the samba shares backup programs isn't even visible let alone it's sub directories. oh and before I get windows flamed, I use it for gaming and this is where I keep backup's of the installers of dowloaded applications that i may want to reinstall later. for example: anti-spyware programs. if no one helps me here in a few days I'm going to start a new thread. thx for any more help I can get. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |

I think your problem is the name of the file share is longer than 12 characters. Before Windows XP and Windows 2003, the longest file share name recognized is 12 characters. I am still looking for more information if there is a "fix" for Samba to work with longer file share names like those supported by Windows XP.
BTW - I am also only a noob by post only. |

oh I thought that would only cause problems if the person trying to read the share had an older system. I didn't realise samba didn't support it either. I'll try it later see if shortening it works. _________________ I don't hang out here anymore, try asking on http://unix.stackexchange.com/ if you want my help. |
