ho installato gentoo 2005.0 su due ibm thinkcentre (pentium 4 ht). Su uno ho compilato il kernel da me, sull'altro ho usato genkernel.
In entrambi i casi ho riscontrato lo stesso problema: dopo alcune ore di inattività il pc si blocca e non risponde ai comandi o se risponde la risposta è lentissima (anche senza far partire il server X). Di solito avviene dalle 3 alle 8 ore dopo che ho lasciato il pc (me ne accorgo dalla segnalazione dell'orario sballata). Ho pensato fosse un problema di acpi ma non sono riuscito a risolverlo.

Hai provato a disabilitarlo? Mi sembra che basti passare il parametro "acpi=off" al boot.
Controlla anche che nel BIOS non ci siano strani settaggi che forzano l'intervanto del risparmio energetico e facci sapere

Io proverei anche a passare come parametro noapic alla append line del kernel, ovviamente prima prova il consiglio di randomaze.
