Greetings!

It's my first post here, as I've always found everything I've needed already answered for me :)

Anyway, the problem:

I'm running a dual boot XP/2.6.11-r3 on a Dell 700M. I use the ipw2200 1.0.3 driver for my wireless radio. When I use XP, I find multiple AP's within range using NetStumbler...

But, when I use nix, I only find the one that I'm connected to:

Code:
crib / # iwlist eth1 scan
iwlist eth1 scan
eth1      Scan completed :
          Cell 01 - Address: 00:0F:66:53:B1:26
                    ESSID:"Hamilton"
                    Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
                    Mode:Master
                    Channel:11
                    Encryption key:off
                    Bit Rate:54 Mb/s
                    Extra: Rates (Mb/s): 1 2 5.5 6 9 11 12 18 24 36 48 54
                    Quality=62/100  Signal level=-63 dBm
                    Extra: Last beacon: 9ms ago

I know it's whatever I'm connected to, because sometimes I'll get a lease from Hamilton, sometims from NETGEAR. And, the corresponding AP is listed when I do a iwlist.

The kicker is, neither Hamilton nor NETGEAR are mine (I'm Paradox :P). I can connect to my AP if I set things up manually, but I'm more curious why the scan doesn't have accurate results.

Thanks!

Hmm that's odd, are you always trying it as root? I did find this part interesting from the man page:

Quote:
Triggering scanning is a privileged operation (root only) and
normal users can only read left-over scan results.

Maybe you are seeing results leftover from an old scan?

Unfortunately that wasn't the problem.

It gets even weirder. I borrowed my neighbor's D-Link DWL-G630, config'd it with ndiswrapper, and the same thing happened. I would get a lease from a random AP (which is fine), but whenever I would try to scan, I'd only get the one I was connected to in the list.

I'd sincerely like you to try "iwlist eth scanning" -scanning-. Keep us posted. Not saying it makes a difference though, but I always feel like it comes up with more aps when i du scanning. Might be my imagination, when i come to think about it. :)

You can try changing your wireless card's sensitivity "iwconfig eth1 sens #" (man page for details)

How are you telling it which AP to connect to?
