| I was looking through the raid install howto using mdadm. My question is why can't I just make md0 the whole disk and partition md0 after the array is started? |

because md0 is a partition made from partitions on two individual disks...
you can't partition a partition...

I stand corrected...
Should also mention that it's a more complicated setup... Additionally, I don't think you can't create just one software raid partition occupying the whole drive and create an lvm physical volume from it and expect to boot from it... But hey, I was wrong before
